First of all, where´s there´s a will there´s a way (querer é poder), if you want some extracurrilar activities, say to read something, go to educational sites the likes of:
To ask question about English, to communicate and see how your English is doing (by writing you are already being corrected, and you see how your English stands to the test of usage.)
Too bad that a people with qualification stiffles innovation and creativity! but don´t get stuck, take a couple of hours to communicate, read a book, read a gossip mag (People, Intouch, TMZ) or comics/cartoons "Dilbert, Lola, et cetera...leitura-de-livros-em-ingles-t32619-10.html
You can get some CDs, movies, DVDs. You can sing, and then you can "force" your classmates to talk to you in a more "challenging" way, using more vocab, even if you are studying the lesson of the day.
How is that? when I was taking an English course, I would do the homework as quickly as possible. Then when I went to the course, at night, I had already answered everything (it helped that our teacher wanted us to talk only in English, now I am a bit rusty, rustier than I were at the time...)
I would to sites, read other books and when I met the teacher, I had a small notebook with question, the likes of "would the pronounce of "eat" and "ate" be different- yeah. Which would be the pronounce of "three" and "tree"? The different voicing of "the" -when before a consonant or before a vowel. Things like that.
Our teacher would turn a DVD on, and we would watch it, then we would discuss what we understood, even if "lost" something of the character "lines", we could talk about what we understood from the background plot.
Well, I am not judging your teacher, though. I don´t know his/her reasoning, so I can´t follow it, for the time being.
I just had an experience in wich my first teacher wanted us to willingly get involved into the culture, and he suggested other books (grammar books, for instance.)
Believe me, there were some classmates that weren´t happy with that, they went to the Head of the school and pointed out that such books weren´t the ones we bought, it would mean more money invested. The end result? our teacher left the school, we had a new one, very good, but the first one was excellent.
Anyway, I learnt with some teachers, without them, and in spite of some. Here I am, not good, but I can get by.
I bet you will get there as well.
