Much impact x Much of an impact: Much ou Much of (a/an)?
All of these (link is external) small things influence how satisfied we are with our lives overall, even though it doesn't seem as if they should have MUCH OF AN IMPACT.

The forms "much impact" and "much of an impact" are essentially synonymous. "Of an" is added almost solely for emphasis and flow, but, semantically, it doesn't do a whole lot for the sentence other than make it longer and slightly verbose. Regardless of whether this can be considered proper usage, both forms work, and both forms are extensively used.
