Plunge x Dive: Qual a diferença
COMO COMBINAR PALAVRAS EM INGLÊS

Sometimes the meanings intercepts, sometimes not.
You can say skydive, not plungedive.
Dive time, in scuba dive means the time spent underwater it wouldn´t be natural to say plunge dive; then comes the dive alarm, dive fishing (pesca submarina) and the list goes on for ever.
In the sense of "diminuição/queda acentuada de...'' (decrease) it intercepts more often than not, as an example:
Following a plunge in international prices, a severe drought and run-ins with the government over export taxes...
(Após a queda dos preços internacionais, uma grave seca e disputas com o governo sobre impostos de exportação...) source - linguee.
Taking the plunge, may mean "decidir/tomar uma decisão/mergulhar de cabeça em algo/dar um passo para algo..."
One day I asked and she said yes and on May 17, 1991 we took the plunge and have not looked back.
