Yes, generally a trip is some excursion or journey in which you go and return, usually for pleasure OR a particular purpose.

Take a trip (=go somewhere for pleasure)
Make a trip (=go somewhere, and perhaps come back)
A day trip (=when you go somewhere for pleasure and come back the same day)
But of course, you could go somewhere, an appointment and be back, if you get there and the person isn't or you aren't successful in what you wanted to do then you had a 'wasted trip' (você deu uma viagem perdida), sorry!
