Posso usar “Can’t I?”

-Don’t take it personally.
-I didn’t.
-It’s because you got so serious all of sudden.
-Can’t I? (Eu quis dizer tipo, Ué eu não posso?)
-What?
-C A N’ T I?
-Sorry?
-Can not I?
(Ele ficou com cara de tipo: Qq?)
Enfim, troquei a estrutura e ele entendeu.

Ps: a forma nao contraída é " Can I not?".

I thought of:
Why can´t I? /why, can´t I feel like getting serious?
Or
Am I not entitled to feel like/am I not allowed to?/am I not supposed not to feel offended? (offended, for instance, could be upset/uncomfortable/get suddenly serious).

In explaining mode: ...it´s nothing wrong with being serious, anyway (then you can talk about your reasons for, if you like it).

There is also the "can´t I feel what I feel?" (here a bit defensive, though.)

OR still
Is it wrong to be serious? Is there anything wrong with getting suddenly serious? (perhaps combined with "this is no laughing matter/or that is not my idea of fun", about a joke, etc.

Of course there are situations an situations. Sometimes a sentence like "why did you get so serious all of sudden?" will mean, "I can´t believe you took this seriously/took personally." A bit on the dismissive side OR even a bit judgemental side (like "what a stupid, foolish thing to do).

Other times, it just means "don´t take things seriously, man." I didn´t mean any offense" or "what did I do to make you feel like that?", a prospective question on good faith. Sometimes we have to give people the benefit of the doubt.

This is the context-wise, and sometimes isn´t just about English learning, but communication (which involves psychology, emotion, the interaction itself).

Vou te dizer, o tal do ' CAN'T I? Can't I?" nesta conversa.
Considere substituir, neste tipo de resposta curta para expressar possibilidade/condicionalidade, o auxiliar modal CAN pelo SHOULD ou até pelo SHALL (arcaico) > "Shouldn't I?" - "Shan't I?".

"Shouldn't I?" passa outra ideia e nao é que o autor do tópico quis dizer. "Can't I?"
