Obrigada!

You’ve asked numerous questions! I strongly believe that you’ll find the answers reading the links below.
A good language teacher is above all a tenacious researcher. A language teacher must have an unquenchable thirsty of knowledge and he also must be an insatiable reader. Never forget that.

Ola Lorena!

Milenar,

I think there are students and students. You have to perceive them correctly; some students make up their minds to enroll in an English course on the grounds of hearing everything in English.

On the other hand, there are other students who want to hear all the grammar explanation in Portuguese, because it is much easier for them to understand and assimilate the content given.

You have to be careful inasmuch as if you get your students accustomed to hearing long grammar explanations in Portuguese, they will be led to the “horrifying addiction” to thinking in Portuguese before thinking in English.

If you are teaching grammar in English and they don’t understand you, what should you do? Go to the board write the topic shortly (never give long, boring explanations you don’t have time to do that and you may put yourself at risk of getting lost. And, which is worse, your students could get bored easily by this endless explanation). Your classes can’t cause boredom.

Put the translation e.g verb to be (ser, estar). Don’t translate everything. Teach affirmative, question and negative forms of it in English. Don’t translate the sentences you wrote in English. I’m going to give you an example:

Verb to be (ser, estar)
Affirmative form: I’m a woman. She is a woman. They are boys.
Write all the subjects with their respective forms of the verb to be.
Negative form: I’m not a woman. She isn’t a woman. They aren’t boys.
Question form: Am I a student? Is she pretty? Are they boys?
Emphasize the inversion of the verb at the beginning of the question.
Don’t translate everything, only if they ask. You write on the board: woman- mulher. Write don’t say it, ok?
Work with repetition. Give exercises to them. Ask them to work in pairs and change the sentences into question and negative sentences. They will understand the topic by learning through repetition and speaking in English. Example of an exercise:

It’s extremely important to control your time. If you have one class of 60 minutes keep in mind that you don’t have time to translate every word. It’s a huge waste of time. You will be “stealing” precious time from your students. Students must learn to translate words on their own.

I strongly advise you to stimulate them to use a dictionary and to translate the words from the English textbook before coming to class. It will save a huge amount of time. They must learn how to optimize their time.

A good language teacher should ignite intellectual curiosity in his students.

I hope that it helps you.

A very interesting topic. Indeed. It was tremendously rewarding.

Agreed. I took an English course (a conversational one) and the teacher used English, when someone didn´t understood, he used Portuguese (but only when...)
Obvioulsy, it depends on wich level of listening the learn is. In that case, the teacher had to switch to Portuguese, because the students demanded, they had paid their classes and they thought themselves entitled to understand the teacher, wich couldn´t be with English...
The thing is, I learned a lot (now I am back to scratch if compared to that time.). Indeed the class had begun with 30 students and from the original group, and ended with two, 28 where from groups that joined afterwards (the same pattern beggining with 30 or so, and then thinning out to a determined few.
Unfortunately, I must say. But then, there are classes and classes!
