No sentido de principal, main é menos formal do que principal. Tirando isso, são iguais.
Do Merriam-Webster:
Do Merriam-Webster:
- My principal reason for moving is to have a shorter drive to work. [Meu principal motivo para me mudar é ter que andar menos de carro até o trabalho.]
- My main reason for moving is to have a shorter drive to work. [Meu principal motivo para me mudar é ter que andar menos de carro até o trabalho.]
- The principal looked worried today. [O diretor da escola parecia preocupado hoje.]
Very seldom is principal used in the same context as main. First thing that comes to most people's minds when they hear it is the person with the highest authority position in a school. I wouldn't ever use "principal" as "main" , if I were you I would just stick to the latter but if you want to know the difference Donay has already precisely explained it, it is just a matter of formality. 'Principal', is quite a bit more formal than 'main', hence it being used less frequently. People will take casual and informal over formal most of the time.
