Put on a brave smile x Put a brave smile

Qual é a função da preposição on nessa frase? Sua remoção muda o sentido?

Segue abaixo, o contexto:

'What is the matter?' Van Helsing asked impatiently.
'I thought I saw a face,' Holmwood said, pointing towards one of the many dark passages around them. 'It was just for a second.'
Nobody moved for a minute, and then Arthur put on a brave smile. 'It was probabley just a shadow,' he said.

Variante: Artur put on a brave front. ← Mesmo sentido, porém mais comum. Se não me engano, put on a brave face, outra variante, tem o mesmo sentido.

Mr. Boamorte really didn't want to spend Thanksgiving with his wife's unrelenting troublemaking parents, but he put on a brave face and suffered through it with a smile.

Mon Dieu help me get that down in a decidedly simpler way. :(

Ex.:

The guy's unrelenting trouble[-]making parents put his unread book on the table.
He then walked into his sleeping room where he put on a funny hat and a freshly ironed sleeveless Sudanese shirt. "I'm gon—gon—sorry for stammering—gonna put on a pot of coffee, and I'm gonna stay right here," he defiantly told them. He obviously had put on an Australian accent in view of the circumstances, his parents tightening their fists as the atmosphere grew dense and heavy. "Don't put us on, young man," they told him right through their teeth.
