O história do jogo se passa em uma mansão onde experimentos eram realizados por uma empresa chamada Umbrella Corporation, uma das principais responsáveis por um vírus terrível, o T-vírus. Os personagens heróis precisam acabar com o esquema matando monstros e enfrentando perigos.

Perhaps the question should be "why the game is called Resident Evil?". Well, in Japan is called Biohazard, in the US they got concerned it wouldn't be an acceptable or accepted trademark.
So, they made an intern contest and Resident Evil was chosen.
In medicine, the word "evil" can be replaced by "bug/plague/infection/contagion/epidemic/menace/contagious disease" etc.
Resident - would have the meaning of something that 'dwells" (mora) in the "hosts" (guests), the ones carrying a virus or 'foreign invader' that could trigger an antibody attack (immunologic defense).
