Qual melhor tradução para "characters in the play"?

"characters in the play"

EXAMPLE:

It has become rather like watching the Becket play "Waiting for Godot".

Ricardo.
Acho que poderia ser:
Personagens (da obra)
Personagens (do livro)

Could be the same as "characters in the story/characters in the novel/characters in the drama" if in prose, but I don´t know if your book is novel, let alone the genre.

Let´s say, it is a prose based in a play, or a book/novel turned into a play or vice-versa.
For example there´s a booklet with based into play Who is Afraid of Virginia Wolf, in it the characters in the play would be understood as the ones in the stage (the meaning would intersect with the above one).
