Qual o plural de Família em inglês

Hi!

I have read that the word family can be used in the plural form and in the singular form with no changing of its spelling. So, I just wanted to be sure if the word families doesn't exist. Can we use "families for biological groups. For example: Cat and Birds belong to different families.

Thanks!

Samoa

Samoa,

"Family" admite o verbo nas duas formas(singular,plural).-->"grupo de pessoas com relação de parentesco"

A new family has/have moved in next door.(Cambridge)

"Family" pode se referir a "grupo de pessoas com relação de parentesco","grupo biológico".

Sim,você pode usar "families" no plural.

Bons estudos!

Complementando,

Talking about singular and plural words, another word that we should to pay attention is "people".
It is already a plural word. It makes difference when when use "the" before it.

People - pessoas
The people - o povo

I hope that helps

There is something strange about this... you're correct, but the example isn't! Since "A family" is singular, "have" is wrong.

Here is an example where the word 'family' is used as plural:
"My family are coming here for our traditional Christmas dinner."

family (singular) = a group of related people
family (plural) = undefined member of family
families (plural) = several groups

Dlr,

The example definitely isn´t wrong. It was made by Cambridge. I believe that it might sound strange but, in fact, it is correct. Languages can be unpredicatable.

Thank you for posting,
So, the following sentence is also ok:
Two new families have moved in next door.
Aline, it was a good tip, I haven't think about it before.
"Folk" is all right for "povo" too, right?
Thanks a lot people.

It can be informal, but I've heard some people calling their family by " My folks ", maybe it worth instead of " family or families" in a informal way, of course.

I understand that the example is from Cambridge, and that's why it seems so odd. Sure, with the word 'family' there is some ambiguity, but you can tell that it's singular by the article 'A' which is singular.

Although, it seems that the rule when dealing with groups is to use plural if the emphasis is on the individuals of the group and singular if it's on the group as a whole. For example:

"A group of people are watching" sounds more natural than "A group of people is watching" which actually is correct. However "A crowd of people is forming" sounds correct and is correct.

In the Cambridge example, the emphasis seems to be on the group as a whole, but in either case when I read it, it immediately appears wrong to me.
