Hello,
Tenho esta dúvida. Hoje estava lendo meu livro de inglês e havia uma questão "respond blá, blá, blá" (não lembro a pergunta). Mas também há uma outra palavra correspondente a responder em inglês - answer -. Então fiquei na dúvida: como utilizar?

Mensagem enviada pelo João Ghizoni no blog.Flávia, we use “respond/reply” when we are reacting (often orally) to a sentence, a greeting, whereas “answer” is used as a response to a QUESTION. If someone says “Good morning, Flávia”, you’ll RESPOND, “Good morning, João. If someone sends you an e-mail message, you’d better RESPOND to it as soon as possible. On the other hand, if somebody ASKS you “Where do you live?”, you’ll ANSWER, “I live in Brazil.”

Creio que a unica diferença seja que Respond é Bem mais Formal.Ainda há o Reply, que é usado mais no inglês escrito para falar sobre algo que alguém disse.

Sim, ''respond'' é um tanto mais formal. Além disso, "respond" costuma pedir a preposição "to" em exemplos como os a seguir:
Dave didn't respond to any of her emails.
Dave não respondeu nenhum dos emails dela.
She never responded to my letter.
Ela nunca respondeu minha carta.

Respond, em alguns casos, também pode significar 'reagir', como no exemplo abaixo:
"But the EU has the tools to respond to the crisis."
Reply pode, às vezes, significar "réplica", ou seja, uma resposta imediata.

There are so many permutations between 'answer' and 'response' it's practically impossible to make watertight distinctions between their uses. But some things work, and other don't:
In response to your question, I cannot provide an answer. (A response was made.)
