Reverse Engineering

Actually, this is also a great way to learn English, by reverse engineering.

Come to think of it, how do you say "reverse engineering" in Portuguese?

Engenharia reversa. You probably thought of it. So did English/Brazilian Portuguese translators on a word-to-word basis.

How should us ESL learners go about it, looking up words in a English reverse dictionary, reading a grammar book from the last page back to the first, parsing whole sentence clauses and attempting to decode them into lesser clauses or what?

IMWTK.

Here's my rewrite, Marcio:

"How should we ESL learners go about it: look up words in an ..., read a..., parse..., and attempt to... clauses, or what?"

I dunno. It's a conundrum.

I thank you for your rewrite, Henry.

Sirs,

Henry took off all Marcio's "ings" but used "rewrite" as a noum. I know "escrita" as "writing", so I conclude "reescrita" should be "rewriting". What do you think about it?

Good point. "Rewrite" as a noun has become common. See, for instance, http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rewrite. Or go to Google for "my rewrite", for ex. If you want to use "rewriting" as a noun, it's ok, but probably better to use "revision."

In this case I think the term "reverse engineering" would be an allegory, and not something literal. Meaning that a Portuguese speaker could learn English by helping an English speaker with Portuguese, and vice versa. However it is an interesting concept, but it may be off topic.

Trailing after Bill on this one, you start off with an expression that you can assume is genuine English, because it came from a native speaker. I guess then you go to the English-Portuguese section of your dictionary instead of the Portuguese-English?
