"Simpler" or "More simple"

" We Italians sometimes throw across a folded piece of paper with our number on it. How much simpler to take a note of the number plate and see if the car is regitered on the website."

When I saw this sentence I asked myself if it wasn't better to use "more simple" instead of "simpler". Does somebody know the grammatical reason for this use of "simpler"?

As duas formas são aceitas. "Simpler" é uma forma mais comum, a meu ver.

''I would imagine myself using either, probably "simpler" more of the time, but it is one of those words where both forms can be used.'' - Wordreference
