Sitting x Sat: Qual é a diferença

Dear Sirs,

In the sentence below there is a very good question that English learners often ask me.

There are 2 people sitting on the couch.
Há duas pessoas sentadas no sofá.

Why in English is in the gerund whereas in Portuguese is in the past participle? What is the explanation for it?

Regards.

I think there's really not much to it other than just the fact they're two different languages with their own structures and patterns. I'd rather not overthink it and just look at it this way.

Não há uma explicação que acrescente muito a uma aula para alunos iniciantes de inglês como segunda língua. É melhor simplesmente aprender e aceitar que em inglês é dessa maneira.

Sitting: sentado
Sat: sentou

Standing: de pé, em pé
Stood: ficou de pé

Lying down: deitado
Lay down: deitou

That's it for now!

O ing é usado para dizer que alguma coisa está acontecendo naquele momento em que se fala, então sitting, standing e lying down são coerentes com o significado. Talvez a falta de coerência esteja no português.

John is sitting now. [John está sentado agora.]
Anna is standing by the door. [Anna está de pé ao lado da porta.]
The boy is lying down on his bed. [O menino está deitado na sua cama.]

Se você fosse explicar a mudança de posição, no momento em que ela está ocorrendo, recomendo sit down (John is sitting down, John está se sentando), stand up (Anna is standing up, Anna está se levantando), lie down (The boy is lying down, O menino está se deitando).

By the way, gerund (inglês) e gerúndio (português) são coisas diferentes.

Sitting = present participle
He is sitting = present continuous.
