Bianca,

Eu estava fazendo uma aula de inglês.
Eu estava preparando uma aula de inglês.
Eu estava criando uma aula de inglês.
Eu estava desenvolvendo uma aula de inglês.
>> I was preparing an English class.

Eu estava fazendo uma aula de inglês.
Eu estava assistindo uma aula de inglês.
Eu estava participando de uma aula de inglês.
Eu estava presente numa aula de inglês.
>> I was having / taking an English class.
>> I was attending an English class.

I believe we have a slightly difference between the verbs to take and to have in this context. If you are taking a class, for example, it is already implied you are the student or an auditor.

However, if you are having a class, you are attending a class, so you have a class scheduled, which can be true for either the speaker or the student auditor.

So, it is a matter of formality.

And chances are that sometime when you state that you mean "eu estava estudando inglês/estava tendo aulas de inglês" OR "fazendo um curso de inglês" (fazendo aulas num curso), etc... That is, when sometimes even if you use singular meaning plural in Portuguese: estava tendo aula = estava tendo aulas (regularmente).

Thus, to "eu estava estudando inglês/estava tendo aula(s) de inglês" it could also be "I was taking up English/I was taking English classes" (informal ways).
More on the formal side: I was having English classes (at school/at some English school, and so on).

It depends on what you mean at that time of the saying/writing, of course. So, this is just a pointer, sort of. It applies to a given situation (albeit a usual one with Portuguese wording).
