Fall down x Fall over: Qual a diferença

"The boy fell down" = O menino caiu.
"The bottle fell over" = A garrafa emborcou.

A palavra tombar, pelo menos pra mim, pode ser usado para pessoas. Por esse motivo não poderia ser usado como tradução de fall over.

Discordo deste comentário. "Tombar" é bem menos comum em relação a pessoas - para mim, um uso raro. ''Tombar" é uma boa tradução para "fall over".

Fall down - The fall of the object or living being happens horizontally. Examples: Disoriented birds hit a building in the fog and fell down. / She suddenly got dizzy and fell down on the street.

Fall over - The fall takes place sweeping an angle. Examples: The runner tripped over a rock and fell over. / The kid hit a vase on the table and it fell over.

Using either one is a matter of choice and depends on the particular movement that the writer wants to bring out.
