Speaking English for 30 seconds a day

3 13 98
Hello everyone,

Some days ago I asked on Facebook what is the greatest difficulty for learners that study English alone over the Internet. About 500 readers answered the question. After compiling it I realized that most people just don't know how to get the feedback on how they are speaking and pronouncing. So, why not launch here on English Experts an area where people can speak and get feedback from other learners and teachers?

I believe that "practice makes perfect", so I'm calling you to start speaking English for at least 30 seconds a day.

How to do that? Very simple. Write a brief script and record a voice message here on the forum talking about anything. For instance, you can tell us what happened with you during the day, who you met, what are your goals for tomorrow and so forth.

Thank you in advance for taking part in it.

Take care!

Hi English Experts readers. I've studied English for many years and, also, had the privilege of living in England where I really could develop my English skills specially meeting people from various parts of the UK. They have lots of different accents and dialects. This helped with my listening and, definitely, I learned many phrasal verbs. The British people use a lot of them in their conversation. I lived in the south of England where the accent is very different than the one from the north, considering that England is not a very big country. This happens because Great Britain has influences from a long history, and many settlers from other countries too. So, we find all these different accents that can be very difficult for non-native English speakers. But, once you try and learn them, you'll understand anyone speaking English. Don't feel overawed when you meet someone that speaks in a different accent. Just go for it. Take the opportunity to train your ears.

Hello everyone
Sad story: yesterday I was going to the movie with some girl from school but she stood me up! and she didn't even cared to send me a text telling me she couldn't make it...And after waiting in front of the movie for 40 minutes like a stupid tree I went home to find out that she was on facebook...I didn't bothered talking to her, but after a couple minutes she told me that she was lazy and prefered to stay at home...Can you freaking believe this?!

Hello everybody,

Today I worked a lot, as usual. I began to work at nine o'clock and stopped at eleven fifteen, then I went back home and had lunch. I usually take a break around noon. After lunch, I came back to my school and I'm still here writing, reading and doing all the things that are necessary.

At night, when I finish working, I'll visit my mother-in-law and play cards. No, I won't watch 'Big Brother Brazil.'

Hello guys, today I had a short, but very sad dream. I have a dog, it is almost ten years old, and I dreamed that I was with my hands in its neck, trying to kill it. I woke up in a hurry and checked if it was fine, and it was. And, before you think that I want to murder someone subconsciously, that happened because I read something like that in the book 'The Last Policeman' (it is a great book, by the way).

"Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. But the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. "

Proper Nouns must always be used when writing the names of the languages.
The usage of 'please' and 'thank you' is advisable whenever speaking or writing in English as it sounds more polite.

Hi, good afternoon.

Firstly, I thank you for your help. Você pode dizer:
"I thank you" ou "thanks for …", quando você agradece é sempre à alguém. Exemplos:
I thank you for your help.
I thank her for everything.

Today I woke up 6:40 in the morning. I brushed my teeth and ate a fruit (an apple). At 7:30, I went to work.
Preste atenção aos tempos verbais: você disse "good afternoon" no início, portanto o que você fez pela manhã deve estar no passado: I woke up, I brushed my teeth and ate a fruit.
Também, quando for escrever as horas, a expressão “o’clock” (que significa ‘of the clock’) normalmente é usada somente em horas quando não são descritos os minutos.
Portanto, 6:40 am e 7:30 am ou 6:40 e 7:30 in the morning. Exemplos:
6:00 o’clock, 6:40 am (os minutos foram mencionados portanto normalmente não se escreve o’clock)
7:00 o’clock, 7:30 am ou ‘in the morning’.
Thanks for your help. It’s very important to me.
Thanks for your help”, ou “thanks for the help’.
Lembre-se:
Thank you, ou
Thanks, ou
Thanks for …

I did some corrections (adaptation) to the text.

Marcelo.

Today I woke up at 07:00 am and had breakfast with my wife and my two sons.

O pronome “them” deve ser usado quando nos referimos à eles (they).
They are very beautiful and smart thirteen-year-old and eigth-year-old boys.
We're going to the mall and play in the children's play area.
In the evening, we're going to their grandmother's house.
A forma possessiva “their” deve se usada quando nos referirmos à eles.

Eu espero que você tenha entendido um pouco mais com as explicações, Marcelo.
This is an awesome idea! I think this topic will be very useful (: So there goes my speech (and sorry for the bad quality of the microphone!):

Hello, everybody! My name's Mariana and I live in São Paulo. I have known English Experts for quite a long time and even wrote some articles for the website (which is something I hope to do more in the near future). I really like both the website and the topics we discuss over here. I find this experience of speaking English for 30 seconds a day very useful for everybody who wants to polish their skills in English or simply don't get it all rusty. I've been to an English course for four years, but ever since I've dropped it I've been trying to recover my British accent. I'd like to hear any reviews or corrections on this recording, and I also hope I can be of any help for those who are recording their own speeches. Have a nice day!
Hello,

I'm understand your explanation. It has been very good for my learning.

Thank you.

And keep studying hard in law school to be a good lawyer.
Now, I'm going to practice a little bit my Spanish with my friends on Skype.

This correction is for dlis 11 previous post:

dlis 11, your English is not bad. There are a few words in your text that you have to pay an extra attention.
The verb "to take" can be followed by many different prepositions and each one changes its meaning.

"Today I took my baby in doctor" - in this context the preposition is "to"
"Today I took my baby to the doctor".

"...for know as she is" - to know how she is.

"...everything ok" - everything is ok (the verb was missing)

"I took her for school" - I took her to school

"I had a lunch" - I had lunch.

"...drank a orange juice" - I drank an orange juice. The article 'an' is used before vowels (but, in some cases, the pronunciation changes this rule).

Keep studying dlis 11, you can only get better!

Hey dlis, td bem? Good job, you have a pretty broad vocabulary and you're getting your point across perfectly. Anyone who speaks English would understand everything you're saying. But here are some suggestions for ya to polish it and make some minor improvements:
dlis11 escreveu:Hello people,
Not a very common expression in English... It's not wrong, but "Hey folks", "Hey guys", "Hey there", etc. are more common.
First I' would like to thanks all help that I getting in this website.
First I would like to say thanks for all the help that I've been getting on this website.

You can either say "I'd like to", or "I would like to"... You have to choose between the two, they don't mix. ;)

The word help is usually used with the definite article (the), and "thanks" goes with the preposition "for".

And when we talk about something that started in the past but is still going on today, we usually use the "Present Perfect Continuous"... for example, "I have been studying English for 22 years."
Today I'm tired, because yesterday I went a friend party that I didn't see a long time.
You need a preposition for the word (to) go, and "a festa de uma amigo" is a possessive: "I went to a friend's party"

Also, the way you worded this sentence, it sounds like you haven't seen the party in a long time... not the friend.

The relative pronoun usually refers to the previous element of a sentence. So instead, you could say:

Last night (or Yesterday), I went to a friend's party... I hadn't seen him in a long time.
Last night (or Yesterday), I went to the party of a friend that I hadn't seen in a long time.

Also note that I'm using the past perfect for the second part of this sentence... Because there are two events that both happened in the past (going to the party and seeing your friend), but one happened earlier than the other.
We went, I and my family and we like and enjoy so much.
It's probably better to pick just one subject for this sentence.
"I went with my family", or "My family and I went together", etc.

The words like and enjoy usually require an object. You know Borat? He`s one of Sasha Cohen's characters... And he always says "I like" without an object, and it actually sounds pretty funny to native speakers (Sasha is a comedian).

Imagem

So you'd probably rather say something like "I went with my family, and we enjoyed the party a lot."
Today I'm trying to study english hard to improve, my wife went to work and my baby stayed at school.
Today I'm studying hard to improve my English.

First of all, don't say try... That's not a grammar mistake, that's just a mistake in attitude. ;) I'm just teasing you, but Yoda was right:

Imagem

On a more serious note, English (as well as all countries, nationalities and languages), is spelled with a capital letter.
I am still holiday, then I stay at home studying a little more. Thanks for help.
I'm still on vacation, so I stay at home studying a little more.

Almost perfect this sentence, but holiday/vacation needs a preposition, and "então" translates as "so" in this case, because it implies a logical consequence.
I only back to my job on begin of february.

Suggestion:

I only go back to work in early February.

Months are spelled with capital letters too, and "back" is not a verb... You need to combine it with (to) go, for example. The Portuguese verb "voltar" translates as "(to) go back", or "(to) return".

Alright, I've thrown a lot of tweaks at you, but don't worry about your mistakes. You got 80% right, and that's what really matters... you're almost there. You also didn't misspell even a single word, and honestly, that's AMAZING. Now we're just ironing out some details to make it perfect. Congratulations on your efforts!

Finally, I've thrown around a whole bunch of grammar in this post, but it's always good to know WHY something is wrong... that way you can avoid the mistake next time, and also apply the rule to a million other scenarios (extrapolate).

Hope that helps mate, and my best to you all...

~ Frank Florida ~
