Dear Luciene,
Good afternoon.
Salve is a word we can use in formal and informal contexts.
FORMAL CONTEXTS:
We often say this word to greet or praise members of the Church or Monarchy.
Salve, César! = Hail, Cesar! (example of greeting).
Ave Maria! = Hail (Holy) Mary! (example of praise).
Salve Jorge! = Hail (St.) George!
Deus salve a rainha = God save the queen.
The word "hail" was originated in Europe between 1150 and 1200.
INFORMAL CONTEXTS:
However, in informal contexts, we can use the word "Salve" to enphasize how much we respect someone. Sometimes, it maybe sounds ironically.
I should recommend you use the following terms:
Hello / Hi ...
Hello there...
Greetings ...
If you ask for a group to give an ovation, to cheer up for someone, you should say:
Uma salva / Um urra para nosso amigo = Hooray (for our friend).
Eu quero mandar um "oi" / um "salve" para todos os nossos amigos = I want to give a "shout out" to all my friends...
Notes:
Hi / Hello / Hooray are interjections.
(To) shout out is phrasal verb and a slang.
I hope I have helped.
Cf. Shout out
Sincerely yours,
Ricardo.

Não tenho certeza, mas vi a palavra sendo usada em inglês e acho que é isso. No sentido mais informal, que a maioria das pessoas usa, o termo é "Shout Out".
"Um salve para os meus meninos" = "Shout Out to my boys".
"Um salve para os meus meninos" = "Shout Out to my boys".
