I agreed with it, the false cognate has thrown me off the tracks.
Condescending indeed would mean patronising/debasing/superior/demeaning (attitude) in that sentence.
The "condescendente" as per Portuguese meaning, would be "indulgent/lenient/complacent" etc.
So, back to the crux:
