Another synonym for "intelligent" is resourceful, it´s often used referring to people that are capable, creative and intelligent (the word is frequently found at sites that deal with tips on work life).

Another word is "sharp".

And as opposite of bright/sharp - they say in a mocking way: he/she is not the sharpest knife in the drawer/not the brightest light in the harbor/not the sharpest tool in the shed/not the quickest horse in the stable/running on 3 cylinders, etc... Sometimes mocking himself for something dumb that they have just done.
