  • The plastic bottles are going to be recycled. [As garrafas PET vão ser recicladas.]
  • I buy plastic bottles. [Eu compro garrafas PET.]

UK: I have never seen "PET" in association with bottles or plastic. It's not an expression that is routinely used in recyling information here.
USA: My experience here on the US east coast, where we also recycle plastic bottles and jugs, is exactly the same as Mr Graham's on the west coast (post #8); I had never seen or heard the term "PET bottle" before I saw it in this thread.
UK: I think most people in Britain would think you very odd to be talking about PET bottles, unless you were having a technical conversation with a bottling expert.
USA: PET, sometimes PETE, is short for polyethylene terephthalate: a specific type of plastic often used for bottles to hold liquids for drinking. I'd use it if (a) I knew that a bottle was made of PET, not some other type of plastic, and (b) it mattered. Otherwise, the more inclusive "plastic bottle" seems simpler.
UK: If somebody started talking about 'PET bottles' I wouldn't know at once what they meant. Our local council recycling guidance refers simply to 'plastic bottles'.
Bons estudos.
