Em inglês americano, tanto faz trim quanto cut. Em inglês britânico, trim parece ser menos comum.

If a dog or cat was talking to their peers, they would say "clipping the nails". :-)
Could be trim as well, in that case.

I explain, we usually make use of the expression "clipping nails" to pets and animals.
Not that we can´t say that to people, Wordreference where somebody points out that one usually cut your fingernails, and clip your toenails.

Another participant of that Forum says that it depends on the used tool: one would cut the nails with scissors and clip them with clippers. It makes a whale of a sense indeed.

As for the bit of "a dog/cat talking", it was just a sending back to the times "that animals talked" - a little bit of fantasy won´t do harm to anyone. ;-)
