Indeed that is used usually as "tendo (muitas) baixas/tendo baixas em número não usual", or in a more literal way: caindo como moscas (the imagery is of you handing a flit gun and spraying at a swarm of flies, what happens?).

Ref. dictionary.cambridge

So, in practice the players "estão caindo" but as we don't know if it's on purpose (e.g. Feigning to be injured from a tackle ), perhaps it's best to state that "'o time está tendo muitas baixas, os jogagores do time "x" estão caindo como moscas". The last one would be a wordplay of sorts, it could mean both, that they are pretending to fall (for their injuries) or by their (real) injuries.
Anyway, it would be the equivalent to "casualties" in other contexts. If the players don't come back to play, I mean.
