Para dizer trabalhar (no sentido de melhorar, resolver, tratar) em inglês, recomendo utilizar work on.

Eu preciso trabalhar este meu lado. [I need to work on it.]
Eu preciso trabalhar este problema. [I need to work on this problem.]

Bons estudos.

Well, I came late to the game, but here it is:

I get very anxious and self-conscious OR visibly anxious and self-conscious...
when I have/need to speak [*] with somebody in English. I need to work on this issue (and I will).

[*] “speak with somebody in English” or express myself in English before somebody else.

Another way to express that: I have speech anxiety when I have to/I need to speak...
