Você trilhou um caminho árduo e finalmente conseguiu [...]
Esse caminho árduo poderia ser traduzido "Hard Path" ou "hard road"?

But then it doesn´t necessarily need to mention hardships (one can be a faster learner and improve just the same), it could be with the said negative or
Positive/neutral environment.

On the other hand, another thing that springs to my mind is:

You have always faced challenges with the utmost strength, I congratulate you for your success/achievement. OR
You have succeeded despite all the odds, despite hardships, despite not having emerged from a comfortable background, etc ...

Then you can elaborate more on how it happened, how you met that person and his/her story, yada yada yada.
