When you do that, you are a "fixer" of sorts. I understand why he said that, it´s because in America people don´t take for granted what you do for them.
I mean, you took the time and went out of your way to help and get those information to and for him. So you deserve make money out of this, doesn´t matter how much.
And most important, you deserve recognition for your effort. Unfortunately, we Brazilians take for granted (most of the time) what others do to us (a cultural thing indeed).
So, I don´t know if there are many tourists in your area, but you could earn some money or extra money, who knows?
Perhaps could be a good idea you make a business card and work with some tourist agencies, but those are only some comments of mine, I am no expert on this area, so let´s wait others to chime in.
