Tradução de algumas frases da música Photograph

Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes
But it's the only thing that I know
When it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes
It is the only thing makes us feel alive

We keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Hearts are never broken
And time's forever frozen still

Como posso entender o uso desse still, então?

So you can keep me
Inside the pocket of your ripped jeans
Holding me closer 'til our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone, wait for me to come home

Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes But it's the only thing that I know.

As duas situações.
Observe que a 1a e na 3a linha tem um "cordão umbilical", uma ligação que é "love can hurt..." e "when it gets hard... " (a parte difícil/puxada/problemática do relacionamento). Já a 2a e a 4a é sobre como (e porque) ele não desiste:
But it's the only thing that I know.
It is the only thing makes us feel alive.

Está implícito então que:
But (loving) it's the only thing that I know.
(loving) It is the only thing makes us feel alive.

4 [e 5? ...talvez ]) Frozen still:
Frozen - congelado.
Frozen still - congelado, parado no tempo, etc.

So you can keep me
Inside the pocket of your ripped jeans
Holding me closer 'til our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone, wait for me to come home

6 - Você nunca estará só. Espere me voltar pra casa.

E o perfeito é inimigo do bom. :-)

PPAULO, sua contribuição foi ótima, muito obrigado!

Seguem, abaixo, alguns comentários sobre as respostas:

1- Entendo que o sofrimento apontado é sentimental, na música; A dúvida era se esse sofrimento age em quem ama (por frustrações e perdas) ou em quem é amado (por ser submetido a dificuldades, para seu próprio bem). Usei os verbos Doer e Machucar, como exemplos, porque eles possuem usos diferentes, dependendo das frases: Uma faca não dói, ela machuca (alguém ou algo); Um ferimento não machuca, ele dói (ele é sentido como sofrimento);

2- OK - Substituir que eu conheço por que eu sei fazer foi a peça chave para meu esclarecimento;

3- OK - Que confusão causaram ligando a 3 com a 1, e a 4 com a 2. Isso foi feito apenas para dar uma bela sonoridade à música ou porque, em inglês, as pessoas também "pensam" nessa ordem?;

4- Essa pergunta foi pulada. Ela refere-se a ausência aparentemente obrigatória do that na frase marcada;

5- OK - Então, o still deve estar ali para ressaltar que além de congelado, o tempo também está parado (apesar disso ser uma afirmação redundante);

6

1- We are used to think the music is about a relationship with a girlfriend, it´s not. I run a search and found it is about the love a child feels for his grandmother. You find some sites stating it´s for his mother, but it doesn´t seem so. His mother is alive, I don´t know if he would give her tribute now,.but you know, it´s never late or early to praise your parents, grandparents or relatives.

3- Perhaps I puzzled you by throwing numbers, to me it´s a perfect order of reasoning. Not trying to mix up things again, but in two lines it would be:
Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes But it's the only thing that I know When it gets hard,
You know it can get hard sometimes It is the only thing makes us feel alive

Here we have two antitheses (I mean in the sense of contrast):
It (love) can hurt - but it´s the only thing that I know. [ it´s what I know - it´s my natural reaction]
It can get hard sometimes - it is the only thing makes us feel alive (again, it´s the only thing makes us, hence me, alive)

The first reaction is a bit on the gut instinct, and the second is almost gut instinct, but similarly it´s the explaining why he takes this course of action. That is, he won´t do another thing (because doing what he is doing is what makes him feel alive).

4- Sorry for having skipped it in the previous answer, only after rereading it I got hold of what you wanted and where it was.
It can get hard sometimes - it is the only thing [THAT] makes us feel alive.

Could be both, one can use "that" or "leave it out" (omit it), it´s rather usual the omission of it. The relative pronoun [in this case -THAT] can be omitted because it´s also the object of the clause. That is, one would understand it even without such relative pronoun.

Hence, in this case "the only thing" is the object of the verb "makes" , the same way "The woman (that) the man loved was living in New York."

6- translation from Vagalume:
At the end of the song -
When I'm away I will remember how you kissed me // Under the lamppost back on 6th street
Hearing you whisper through the phone // Wait for me to come home

It´s her that was going out, so she would kiss him. Then, certainly when she had time she would call home and assure him and promise him she was going to be back.

And at the middle of it, it´s his time to make assurances to her and the promise to be home:

So you can keep me inside the pocket // Of your ripped jeans //Holding me close until our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone //Wait for me to come home

Então você pode me guardar no bolso do seu jeans rasgado.

Hence, a child that promises to be back home to her. The music is out of the wish to be reunited again, and to protect her with his embrace by presence as any child should -normally - do to their beloved ones.

I hope it have clarified your question. If any more questions raise feel free to ask.

1- In this context, it is a little bit of both, but perhaps a little more towards machucar. The effort of loving here is causing pain (machucar), but in some sense it is completely internalized, that in the act of loving this way you are hurting internally (doer). You are hurting due to the circumstances you are in, in that relationship.

3 - Actually, I would interpret that what's making him feel alive is any challenge, any "pain", not the challenge of love specifically. But it is open for interpretation.

I'm not sure how it goes in Portuguese, but to "feel alive" sounds pretty lofty and can have figurative significance in English. People will talk about how they need to do something exciting in order to make them "feel more alive".

4- Listen very closely to the song again, he does say that but it is under his breath and quiet.

5 - In the context of freezing time, it doesn't sound right to say "time stands". I think it's just become part of all time manipulation vocabulary that time doesn't stand, it stands still.

To expand on the idea, it is possible for a person to stand in one location, but still be moving, fidgeting, wiggling, checking their phone, wobbling from one foot to the other, but someone standing truly still will be completely frozen in their position and not be doing any of those things. A soldier standing at attention ("ficando em sentido") is standing completely still. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_attention

6 - There is some ambiguity here, but it is definitely not the first one - i.e. not "só vá pra casa, depois que eu chegar".

On the surface, it is "stay at home and wait for me, I will be there soon", but there is another meaning for "to come home", which is "to do the right thing in the end, to find one's way back to one's proper path or destiny". I think he meant to play between these two meanings, when writing the song.

Paul McCartney's song "I want to come home" is another example of this usage, and the lyrics convey the idea well.

Of course, the feelings/events in that song can be applied to other relationships as well, romantic ones - for instance.
That´s why we are used to think of the song as such. ;-)
And I completely with Bryan on that one, thanks for your insight, I like it. Especially the item #6, I couldn´t have put it better myself.

4- Listen very closely to the song again, he does say that but it is under his breath and quiet.
This reminds a listening I did with a Maddona´s song, there was a certain word that I never listened, try as I might.
It was an exercise of listening at a speaking English course, I only knew it because it was on the lyrics, in the paper - and my teacher would point out.
Even so, I tried again and didn´t pick the thing up. The word I don´t remember right now, though. It´s such an interesting thing that happens to untrained ears like mine! Trained in Portuguese, but not enough in English I mean.

Take your time.
We know lyrics is something that takes time to digest. There are geographical, the context of the singer background, genre, cross-cultural insights, and other factors in play. ;-)

PPAULO escreveu:4- Could be both, one can use "that" or "leave it out" (omit it), it´s rather usual the omission of it. The relative pronoun [in this case -THAT] can be omitted because it´s also the object of the clause.

The relative pronoun can only be omitted when it is the object of the clause. When the relative pronoun is the subject of the clause, it cannot be omitted. You can usually tell when a relative pronoun is the object of the clause because it is followed by another subject + verb.
PPAULO escreveu:6- And at the middle of it, it´s his time to make assurances to her and the promise to be home:

Bryan

1- OK - Você tem razão. A dor resultante do amor é provocada e sentida, simultaneamente.

Bryan Philpott escreveu: 4- Listen very closely to the song again, he does say that but it is under his breath and quiet.

Sem o that:

https://youtu.be/nSDgHBxUbVQ (a versão originalmente gravada por Ed Sheeran);

https://youtu.be/tIA_vrBDC1g (Alejandro Manzano + Bea Miller)

Com o that:

https://youtu.be/7u9xnnqgG2Y (Leroy Sanchez);

https://youtu.be/D53wZAQ7Kxw (Twenty One Two)

Loving can hurt

We keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Our hearts were never broken

So you can keep me
Inside the pocket of your ripped jeans
Holding me close until our eyes meet
And you won't ever be alone
Wait for me to come home

Loving can heal
Loving can mend your soul

And is the only thing that I know, know
I swear it will get easier
Remember that with every piece of ya
And is the only thing we take with us when we die
O amor cura através do perdão

And if you hurt me
That's okay, baby

Only words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me
And I won't ever let you go
Wait for me to come home

So you could fit me
Inside the necklace you got
When you were sixteen
Next to your heartbeat, where I should be
Keep it deep within your soul
Por isso ele também disse And if you hurt me
That's okay, baby

When I'm away
I will remember how you kissed me
Under the lamppost back on 6th Street
Hearing you whisper through the phone
Wait for me to come home
Quando ele tiver ido embora do orfanato, talvez?

Ps: Albert, quero andar com você no recreio! ^^

I elaborated using the example of standing since it is easier to visualize the emphasis that "still" can convey in that sense. I found an even more visual example for time freezing "still" in the 2002 movie "Clockstoppers": https://youtu.be/1cFyFvO56Sw?t=53

The relevant bits of the conversation:

Girl (0:55): So, your watch stops time?
Boy (0:57): No, look [at that bee]...it's moving...
...
Boy (1:31): [My dad] said something about it accelerating your molecules so fast the rest of the world would seem like it was standing still. I don't think time is stopped, I think we're just moving really fast.

The reason he uses the word "seems" there is because time is not actually completely, 100% still, it only seems like it! There's also a Star Trek TNG Episode called "Timescape" that has a similar premise, where time is moving so slowly it only appears to be frozen.

This is my reference for the difference between saying "time is frozen" (or "practically frozen"), and "time is frozen still". In this case and a few others like it, it is not solely emphatic, nor redundant, to add the word still.

All that said, it is true sometimes that adding still is just for emphasis, especially in figurative senses: "That lecture was so boring there were moments I thought time was standing still."

I guess I can't fully explain every situation when I would or wouldn't add still myself, but I hope that some of these examples are still helpful.

One thing to note in general...this song is about a long-distance relationship between two young adults...not a relationship between a child and their parent. The singer is away from his girlfriend at the time this is being sung.

I don't think the higher pitch section (I'm not sure if it's actually falsetto, or just how his voice sounds when it's that high) is meant to represent anything in particular by being sung in a higher octave.

Entendi corretamente?

The second one (Alejandro Manzano) would be good to keep trying with, because you can actually watch his lips and his chin, and see him pronounce it, even though it is said so under the breath. If you slow down the Youtube playback speed to 0.25 or 0.5 you'd get an even better look at it.

Yes, this is the right way to think about still, when it comes to physical motion. Though it's still common to add further intensifiers to it, when appropriate: "Keep absolutely still. Its vision is based on movement."
I see both of those lines as being said by the lover that is travelling and left their partner at home. The first verse is explaining how he sees the photograph as one place where their love is frozen in time, with them still together, and the second where he expects her to keep this photograph as a memento of that era, and the soothing effect he hopes it will have, until he's able to return home.

Also, the higher pitch voice is used again later in the song to say "you can fit me inside the necklace you got when you were sixteen", which is clearly the boy telling the girl to keep this photograph in her locket while he is traveling.
E você poderia me encaixar

PPAULO escreveu:Hi Albert, I understand "quero andar com você no recreio", I think it was a sort of praise. That is, he would be in good company, I mean learning-related.

Do not jump to conclusions so fast.
The song could well be inspired initially on his mother, and to praise her somehow, albeit - as I pointed out - could be thought as romantically (outside of the initial purpose).
I am not categorically claiming that, but it is a possibility, why not?

It reads "so you could fit me inside the collar you got when you were sixteen" (então você podia me encaixar no colar que você ganhou/conseguiu quando você tinha 16 anos).

The "next to your heartbeat, where I should be" (perto da batida de seu coração, onde eu deveria estar) may be interpreted at least in two ways.
One of them is "onde eu deveria estar" there is - should - we can think in the sense of possibility here. We can use should to say that something is probable because it is logical or normal.

Another possibility is that he - by design - has changed the song a bit just to make it seem more on the romantic side, a singer needs audience and cash, eventually.

Anyway, it can be both ways. Not a far-off possibility of being one or the other, to my thinking.

And thank you Jess, then we all are in good company here! :-)
6 49 1.3k
And Ed is a resourceful singer, he even brought up the jewelry thing to the music (his mother is a jewelry designer), and at the very least her creations and art might have gained some marketing and internet audience with that. :-)
The thing is, perhaps we will never know how it played and people might guess it for ages!

Fair enough, Alberto. He makes that voice...so it could be him mimicking her voice somehow. In that case the translation would still hold, only changing "você nunca estará sozinha" by "...sozinho".
2 22 127
