Thanks for the suggestion of surtir efeito, Paulo.

Work is used a lot this way in English, and I think funcionar is almost always the same, but it doesn't seem to be used nearly as often as work is in informal conversation in English.
  • "Have you tried restarting your computer?"
    "Yeah, but it didn't work."
  • Caffeine doesn't work on me for some reason; I can drink 5 cups of coffee and not feel anything.
  • The labor reforms went into effect 3 years ago, but they don't seem to have worked, as the unemployment rate is still awfully high and wages have stagnated.
And just one little thing: to be perfectly precise, "does" is replacing "starts", so the sentence with full repetition is "I will start working when my coffee starts working"

Assim sendo, podemos pensar em termos de "I will start working when my coffee does" como sendo "I will start working when my coffee is working."

O primeiro verbo work - trabalhar.
O segundo verbo work - funcionar. Ou seja o "does" substitui o verbo "work" da primeira parte, assim evitando a repetição literal.

Thanks for sharing such good insights, Bryan. The "does" thing came in handy since it would go under the radar. Ha ha, I got close but no cigar! :-)
Indeed "surtir efeito" would be something close to a false cognate in English, since in Portuguese it is the same as "work" in English. The imagery could be that when someone take a medicine and 30-40 minutes it begins to "work" on his body.

It was great that we had a sentence with yet another expression "...went in effect" in Portuguese would mean "entrou em vigor/passour a vigorar/passou a valer...", well known in law jargon. One thing leads to another, so very good to have one more expression to build up the vocab of Brazilian learners around. Again, very good! ;-)
