Galera, é a primeira vez que ouço o, creio que, phrasal verb ''jump ship'' ao escutar a NZ Radio National, referindo-se aos diplomatas que ''abandonaram o barco'' ou, até mesmo, aproveitando a rima(?) e considerando o contexto, ''abandonaram o cargo'' pela situação horrenda em que atualmente se encontra a Síria.
Então:
Jump ship = abandonar o barco, abandonar o cargo

When talking about an actual ship (navio, barco), I underestand "to jump ship" as to leave the ship without permssion.
Even if you suddenly quit your job and "jump ship", you are leaving the job without permission.
(b)
As soon as ths freighter reached port, two sailors jumped ship and found jobs in the city. (They did not honor their contract. They left the ship to find work or adventure elsewhere.)

As the ship was sinking, sailors began to abandon it as quickly as possible.
As the ship was sinking, sailors began to jump from it as quickly as possible. (Note the use of "from".)
(They left to save their lives. It was not a whim, It was a necessity.)
Am I wrong?
