Tradução de seared - Obama's speech about Bin Laden's death

Hello friends,

I was watching Obama's speech about Bin Laden's death and I can't understand the following phrase: "The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory". What the president want to say with it, especially the word "seared", which means "cauterizado" or "queimado" in Portuguese?

For those are interested in this speech, the video is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNYmK19 ... ideo_title) and the full text is here (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... -full.html) - it's a nice tip because Barack Obama has a very good pronounce and accent.

Thanks!

Carolmca,

"The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory."
"As imagens do 11 de setembro estão, de forma amarga, na memória do nosso país."

Carolmca, your translation of the word "seared" is correct. (When you "sear" meat, you burn the outside so that the juices are sealed inside the meat and not lost to the skillet or frying pan.) When you "sear" something, you leave a permanent mark, a scar. Obama was saying that the images of 9/11 are burned into our national memory, leaving a permanent mark, a scar. In other words, they are images that will never be forgotten.
