There is no man but prefers... - Tradução em português

Hello guys! I need some help in this saying:

"there is no man but prefers belief to the exercise of judgment" Seneca

Achei outra tradução mais entendível: " everyone prefers to believe rather than to give his own opinion"

thanks,

It seems to be an archaic use of the word "but" to mean "who does not". The book, written by Arthur Schopenhauer, was originally published in 1891 and translated into English.

there is no man but prefers = there is no man who does not prefer

From here: http://gmatclub.com/forum/there-is-no-m ... -4294.html
That is an archaic usage.

p.276 of Modern English: A Practical Reference Guide by Marcella Frank, Regents/Prentice Hall, 1992.

"but (literary usage--appears after a negative verb and is itself negative)

There is not one of us but would (=who would not) find the work difficult."

Samples from Google:

1. there is no man but would be ashamed to be thought not to have as much of it as his neighbours.
2. there is no man but would recognise that he was beautiful
3. there is no man but would diligently pursue pleasure by right or wrong.
4. So humble that no man but would say тАЬNoтАЭ to such bidding if he dare.

In the original saying there is no "but".

Every man prefers belief to the exercise of judgment.

Também fiquei com dúvida, vou acompanhar as outras opiniões que surgirem aqui.
Aliás, acho que depois de ''rather'' não precisamos usar o TO, precisamos?

''Everyone prefers to believe rather than to give his own opinion"
''Everyone prefers to believe rather than give his own opinion"
