"Long long ago there lived in Japan a brave warrior...". Li essa frase em um texto e fiquei curioso sobre o uso do "there lived". Nunca tinha visto essa estrutura em outro lugar. A minha pergunta é: "there live" equivale a "there be"?

I consider some grammar structures old-fashioned or not suitable for communication, especially in the job market.
That's the case of There lived and Once Upon a Time.

By the way, I believe you found the expression on a Japanese fairy tale called "My Lord Bag of Rice".

Examples:

1. There grows in the mankind, a spirit which makes them brave.
>> [E então] cresce na humanidade, um espírito que os torna valentes.

2. There comes a time, in everybody's life, to make things right.
>> Chega um momento, na vida de todos, de fazer a(s) coisa(s) certa(s).
>> Há momentos, na vida de qualquer um, de endireitar as coisas.

3. There seems to be a problem with the motorcycle. [SINGULAR]
>> Parece que há um problema com a motocicleta.

There seem to be several problems with the motorcycle. [PLURAL]
>> Parece que há diversos problemas com a motocicleta.
