Would have worked magic - Tradução em português
Michael was telling me that they actually had an opening when the last person stopped by to ask the ill-phrased question: “Are you hiring?” Instead he suggested that a simple change in the question would have worked magic: “Hey, I hear you’re hiring. Whom should I talk to?

Simon,
First, I would like to Thank you for all your work and the great examples you are posting for our common debate of the English Language.
In other words, asking someone if they are hiring doesn’t mean they are acting in an “ill-phrased” way. The way is actually written, what the subject is doing there in the phrase is just asking a question and that question is neither wrong or could be classified as been “ill-phrased”.
Isto poderia mudar se você usasse a expressão, “Are you “F*%$#@#” hiring?”
Therefore, to really validate your sentence with the expression “ill-phrased”, it should be re-phrased like;
Michael was telling me that they actually had an opening when the last person stopped by to ask the ill-phrased question: “Are you bloody hiring?” Instead he suggested that a...
