Montreal is a metropolis with an old port and numerous architectural highlight.

From the Belvedere atop Mt. Royal, you can see that the downtown is characterized by a cowering glass and concrete silhouette. With population of around 3.5 million people come from 80 different ethnic groups with charming neighborhoods nestled around the elegant skyscrapers.

Across atop Mt. Royal is a beacon and the Olympic Stadium is another icon. Although bilingual with English, Montreal is the largest French speaking city in the world after Paris. This city has a distinct European flare stylishly blending the old with the new.

An excellent subway system connects the most extensive underground city in the world. This subway joins over 2000 shops and restaurants via an 18-mile network of tunnels and indoor plazas.

The fashion industry flourishes along the street of Saint Denis, Loreal and Sherbrooke. Designer boutiques take their place alongside Canadian designers in this multi ethnic crossroads that also has great markets. You cant visit Montreal without sampling a bagel or dropping by the famed church of Brother Andre. Located in old Montreal, Notre Dame Basilica was the location of Celine Dions wedding.

The area known as old Montreal has been a popular center since the city was founded in 1642. Whats been preserved of the area is a remarkable testimony to all of the bygone eras and visitors just love to bask in the history of romance of the shops and sidewalk cafes.

The square here is alive with artisans. It was built in the first half of the 1800s and continues to be a meeting place for diverse people. Visit the Montreal Museum of Archeology and surrounding parks. Grand Victorian homes and quaint ethnic districts bring character to a city that likes to play outdoors that was named the number one city in North America for cycling.

With an ideal situation on the St. Lawrence River, both tourists get passengers and original encounter with the history and geography of Montreal.

Fran, are you planning to visit there?
Yes i would like to go there next year :D what about you??

I was there in 2007 for a couple of days and I do recommend it!
Prepare to listen to much French, and in case you go during winter don't forget the coat, scarf, wooly hat, special socks, boots, gloves, etc etc etc.

Fran, I'm afraid I can't help you much on this because I spent only four days there, I was attending a training and did not have much time to visit the city (even if I had had, I think I would stay in because it was cooooold :o ). The company I work for is in Sherbrook St; I also walked along St Catherine Street (the most famous, with beautiful churches and many stores - and Place des Arts! (nice place). The subway system ("metro" there) is very very old but much more efficient than the one we have in SP. It was really nice to see "normal" people (families, old people, children) talking in French. I had the opportunity to visit a neighbourhood that was not very close to downtown and people there simply did not speak English! (poor me). Almost all houses are made of wood. It was interesting that both in the hotel and in a friend's house there were no lamps on the ceiling like we have here - they use various lampshades instead. Eletronics are way cheaper there. I visited the Casino - :o - it is inside Gilles Villeneune circuit (autódromo). I bet some C$ 0.25 coins and won SIX DOLLARS :D

ahhhh!!!! agora deu saudade!!!! :( :( :(
I remember my teacher asked a "My trip" composition when I returned, I'll be looking for that during the weekend and in case it has any other 'relevant' information I'll post it here.

Ah, do me a favor!
