I was tempted to think that Merit was that, something deserving praise, award or something.
But, I dug a bit more and learned that it was a character here:

The author of the Book (or someone else from the publishing house) decided for the title "Without Merit", it´s a wordplay with "merit" and the fact that she leaves or want to leave her family. Or she debates to do (I didn´t read the book, so it´s a hunch OR probability here.)

That said, the sentence could be translated into:
Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good.
Merit decide destruir/despedaçar a ilusão da família de que ela nunca fez (no sentido de que nunca foi) parte, antes de deixá-los de uma vez (por todas).

She´s never been a part - na verdade é uma abreviação de "she has never been part." Indicando que ela nunca fez parte, e que continua não fazendo, daí o "she has never been a part."

"...antes de deixá-los para trás" (antes de deixar a família para trás) também é uma boa tradução. Como foi colocado por Redseahorse.

Eu conheço essa: "to be a part of (something)" como na frase "I would not be a part of the caravan that year", mas no na frase objeto deste tópico temos: "a part of before" , depois do apart of veio " before" um advérbio e não "algo"(something), então "a part of" é uma variante com sentido semelhante a "to be a part of (something)"? Or o " something" que nesse caso seria : " a ilusão da familia" está implícito?

The something she has never been part of, is the family. To me the writer makes it a bit open to ambiguity, the wording could lead to the thinking that it ("of") referred to the said "happy family illusion".

Mas então se trata de" to be a part of (something)", certo? E o como o objeto(something) já tinha sido citado(famialia), houve uma ocultação pra evitar repetição?
