Uso de "Painting" na frase "He Likes painting flags"

Eu estava lendo um texto simples no inglês e no texto tinha a frase " He Likes painting flags." ING no final.

Alguém poderia me esclarecer essa dúvida?

He likes painting flags.
He likes to paint flags.

Also, another way to think about this specific case is: with like/likes + verb (you can use the gerund, that is, in the ING format). Sometimes people make some subtle distinction, using the ING form to mean something you like doing in general.

Whereas they use the "TO infinitive" form to habitual preferences, as the 'Grammaring' site puts it "something that we do not necessarily like or enjoy but consider as useful, right or wise. Example:
I like to be punctual. (It's important to be punctual and I am.)
I hate to lie, but sometimes I do. (It's not right to lie, but sometimes I do.)

Of course, there are plenty of suggestions around the Web, so this one is just one of them, a rule of thumb of sorts. In practice in many cases those forms can be interchangeable.
