How have U been?

I'm an English teacher and a doubt came out during a class:

The sentence:

A year ago my cousin joined the army and he has gone overseas
A year ago my cousin joined the army and he went overseas

Which of them is right and why?

Hi!!
So, I would say that the right sentence is the second one, ''A year ago my cousin joined the army and he went overseas'', because we have an especific time, we know when the action happened, ''A year ago''.

What tomas said, but you might want to know the difference between doubt and question here.

You can also drop the he. "... and went overseas."
