Question: In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a car?

- Having a car means that you will have to pay a very high vehicle property tax, put up with the traffic, be patient when it decides to stop working...
- Having a car is essential in modern life.
- It is much better, safer and cheaper to take a bus;
- It is even better when you have someone to give you a ride ;)

Now it's your turn!

The advantages are the glamour, easy locomotion and it's better on rainy days. The disadvantages are it can kill you on the road.

Best thing is to have a bycicle.
But yeap, on rainy days it's handy and on cold days as well.
Or when you need to go shopping some food, it's easier if you've got a car.
It's also good if you live in Sao Paulo and you want to go out for a drink at night, then you
can just come back home any time that you want to. Because in SP we don't have night buses.
But glamour? No,c'mom rsrs

And to have a car it's not that good because you help to pollute the air and
you can get dependent on the car. Because after a while if you don't be careful you'll happen
to see yourself getting your car just to go to the bakery right in the next corner.
And you've got to pay loads of taxes to the Government, just because you have a car.
mili
well, where I live car is essencial. so car is a good thing here...hahaha...there's no bus or taxi. In the near city we can find a taxi, but it costs about 50 reais for 5 or 10 minutes driving..it is too expensive!

the bad thing about having a car is: need to pay auto insurance (it is an obligation) and also need to count on the nice weather otherwise need to drive really carefully to not ended up in some harzadous ...

Really? How do bus-commuters get around when they need to leave home for work at night then?

On second thought there's no disadvantage of having a car. You can sell it if you don't like it. I can see real disadvantage if you have none cause you can't selll it.
I think that owning a car isn't as good as most people think it is. First of all, it is not cheap to buy a car. Second, when you buy it, you'll continually spend money on it, whether it is with gas, taxes, maintenance, insurance...

By far, I would prefer a great subway/train system (I mean, a large, efficient and cheap one) rather than a car. One of the problems why that doesn't happen in Brazil (in my way of view) is that car is always referred to as a status symbol. Owning a car means power.

You just need to turn on your TV. The only ads for sure to be seen during every commercial break are the ones related to cars. It's almost impossible to watch an entire commercial break without seeing at least one car ad. Start to notice it.

On the other hand, I think owing a car is useful when you have to go to a remote town, when you want to travel and when the places you usually go don't have a good public transportation system. To be honest, I think that if I had money I would buy a car. But I wouldn't use it on the daily bases unless I really needed it.

What with seeing SP city as a giant city bustling and crammed with activity, I wrongly inferred it would naturally have overnight bus service. No other Brazln city bus company offers overnight service BTW.

As for driving, it takes some getting used to in cities such as SP city. And Bombai, India.

The advantages are you can have some different girls each day... I'm just kidding! One of the advantage is: easy locomotion for me that is the better part of have a car, and the big deal is cope with the traffic of cars every day... because there are many congestion in the main ways and avenues here in RJ.

I think that the more vantage of to have a car is the win the time.

you have time for to go of the work, and faster, to go a university and, still, you can, in end of this lessons, to leave of the girls.

The disavantages is the high cust of the taxes, gasoline, security, etc.
The advantage is about the facility to go where you want , go in the parties and don´t worry about the time to go out , go to supermakert , to work when is raining , take the mother at the hospital and others .
The advantage is about the obligation to pay taxes and more taxes , you always have to have a money to put combustible , you got lazy to walk by foot and becomes sedentary . Since I bought my car , sincerily , I never more had money :D
i dont think its a nice deal, go to the parties driving.. you know,
you cant drink and drive.. thats bad, coz i love going out on weekends, but,
i cant drink.. so, the only one advantage that i see, is for fast locomotion.

oh yea, and pick up girls xD

In all probability, likelihood, honesty and seriousness you may have meant, "... many traffic jams" here.

When it comes to cars and streets, I think all the car makers should start a joint venture with all the street makers on a national basis. Street makers (read City councils), insofar as refers to Brazil, should work fast, a lot more faster than do car makers. The faster street makers put out roadways, the easier and freer cars find room to move. In our actual conjuncture, car driving (even toy car driving) takes some getting used to. Although you can always take traffic for granted from inside your car, you'll find that Paulistan drivers--by far, the most experienced car drivers in continental Brazil--all or individually have their peculiar manners and traits of coping with road rage, for instance.

At one time in point, Paulistan drivers have had to deal with over 400 daily, road rage-related traffic complaints. In one single case, a motorist got out of his car, walked over to the other car and hit the motorist inside it just because the other motorist sneaked a casual look at his girlfriend in passing. In another single case, two motorists repeatedly jammed their cars one against the other simply because the first one hit the other one from the rear, both of whom never once facing each other. When they finally got out of their cars to check for damages, they discovered (or realized all too late) they had met before, had studied at the same school before and often stepped out for a beer or two before, in a manner of speaking!

I'll always ask where have all the civilized, transit-courteous manners gone. (Yes, me and my oft-misplaced adjectives and adverbs want to know.)

BTW have you ever driven a Logan, Logan? I bet you've never driven a Márcio! LOL!

Hi Marcio, Thank you for correct me... I'm just a beginner student, so I don't know many words to supply my wish to write and my wish is that people can comprehend me in the best possible way.

Good joke Marcio, but, If you thought that I never drive a Logan, you're correct... I've never driven a Logan and neither a Márcio...

See you around.

Hi, Logan and Marcio

I guess you are not wrong when you say "congestion". I prefer to use "traffic jams" too, but check it out:

Congestion: overcrowding; clogging: severe traffic congestion ( dictionary.com )

Ailime,

Other options for "traffic jam" are gridlock and hold-up.
The car you don't need pick up the full bus for to go at work. It's easy move, you are a liberty.
The disadvantages is a pollution, the taxes with IPVA. The car is a family, the costs are enormous.

What an interesting question.

While we have public busses here in Pensacola, Florida, they do not run often enough or have enough routes to make them a viable means of transportation for most people. Therefore one can walk or take a taxi or drive himself therefore a car is almost a necessity, except in the largest cities, where we have efficient mass transit.

But the most important advantage of owning a car is that I do not have to ask my wife to let me use her car if it is raining and I do not want to get wet while riding my Harley.

The biggest disadvantage is the total cost of owning and operating any motorized vehicle which includes: purchase price, insurance, gasoline, maintenance, parking, toll roads and last but not least #@%*!?$& TAXES :x . Here the average cost to operate a cheap compact car is about US $0.75 per mile or about R$0.83 per KM.

Those who drive a cheap compact car please raise your hands. Now please tell us the advantages and disadvantages of driving one.

Me, I drive a cheap compact 4-door Prisma sedan 2007, which runs on gasoline and ethanol. Do many of you enjoy big car driving? Does big car driving offer advantages or disadvantages? Please name them.

Marcio,

We, Cristina and myself, have a Nissan Quest, 7 passenger van with a 3.6 liter 210 HP V6 engine, a Mercury Cougar (similar to a Ford Mustang) 4 passenger car with a 4.6 liter 300 HP V8 engine, and a Harley Davidson Dyna Glide 2 passenger motorcycle with a 1.6 liter 80 HP V Twin. Both the Nissan and Cougar give excellent rides, and in the event of an accident will provide more passenger protection than a compact car. The Nissan gets about 25 Miles Per Gallon (10KM/L.) (70 Passenger/KM/L) and the Murcury gets about 19 MPG (7.6 KM/L.) (30 Passenger/KM/L.) The Harley offers no protection in an accident, does not have air conditioning, has a great ride, is very maneuverable, is a lot of fun to ride and gets about 50 MPG (20 KM/L.) (40 Passenger/KM/L.)

So I guess you have to consider all the alternatives, and make a choice of what is most important to you. In my case the Harley wins "hands down". :D Now if I can just "keep the shiny side up and the rubber parts down". ;) :D By the way heaven is, "A V Twin between your legs, the wind in your face, and a long "twisty road".

Three idioms to ponder or look up:
Hands Down.
Keep the shiny side up and the rubber parts down.
Twisty road.

We have loads of advantages of having a car, such as to be quick and fast to go and come back wherever you go and the fact of not depending on inefficient public transport system, especially if you do not have easy access to the metro train service. On the other hand, own a vehicle means to have expenses on maintenance services, taxes, insurance service and moreover, you should be aware of the possibility of having extra expenses on an eventual car crash. In short, you should analyze the benefit and harm of having a car before owning it.
Marcio_Farias 1 24 214
Bill, as with any imported American car to drive around in a Mercury Cougar in Brazil one has to have a lot of dough. I myself have never seen a Cougar cruising around here. Camaros notwithstanding, I have only seen a few Tangs, one as old as 1974 that had dual exhaust pipes that made a lot of noise, just as loudly as thunder when its owner revved it up. Rarely do onlookers see Cougars, Tangs and Camaros now as they constitute a rare scene today. Only so recently, however, did GM of Brazil decide to import Camaros and Malibus for resale within continental Brazil. Still a few fortunate drivers will sit behind the wheel of (and cruise in) one of these.

To get one of these I'd have to work a lot and build up a big pile of cash in a savings account. This would take more than a hundred years! Seriously. :|
It is so dificult answer this question. It depends on many situations.

Advantages: not walking more, would go to school by car.
Disadvantages: for those who live in sao paulo, would pick up traffic.
Marcio_Farias 1 24 214
Very recently I have had to replace both my front wheel and rear wheel bearings. They made a kind of strong humming noise when my car picked up speed. For a car with only 36000 km on it, I think the bearings started pitting and making noise a bit too early.

While steering my compact car through and around Recife's potholes has become increasingly hard, I have strongly considered selling the car for fear of incurring extra maintenance expenses. I can always catch the 440 commuter bus on the way to and back from work. And I can always take a nap while doing so. Let the bus driver do the steering for me!

Ailime,

How about these changes?

We have loads of advantages of having a car, such as providing one with a fast way to travel, without having to depend on the inefficient public transportation system, especially if you do not have easy access to the metro train system. On the other hand, owning a vehicle obligates one to the expenses of maintenance, taxes, insurance and the ever present danger of large cash outlays in the event of an accident. In short, you should analyze all the benefits and detriments of ownership before purchasing any vehicle.
ailime 2
Good morning Bill! :D

I always benefit from your rewriting. I have also learnt "outlay", which means "spending, expenditure".
I took an example: An in initial outlay of hundreds of thousands of dollars was well worth it.
Good word, indeed! ;) Thanks!!

Still about your rewrting, if you allow me, I would like to ask why you chose "detriments" instead of "harm" . Is "harm" inappropriate in this context?

Regards,
ailime
