Question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying alone?

Advantages:

I can study whenever I want, if I feel like studying at 3 a.m. I can do it :)
I can choose the subjects I like most.
Nowadays it is perfectly possible to have the same advantages of a school by using the Internet tools.

Disadvantages:

I miss having a good teacher around to correct my mistakes.
I wish I studied with a group of other students so then we could share our experiences and practice conversation.
It is difficult to organize myself and know what is important to study and what is not.

Now it’s your turn!

Jumiut,

If I may, I would like to offer the following rewrite of your post, and have you tell me why I made the changes.

Advantages: I can set my own schedules and it is a very cheap way to learn any subject.

Disadvantages: Sometimes I lack the necessary discipline, also I do not have a teacher to answer my questions, and correct my pronunciation of words.
The advantages: I can study whatever topics i want to,do my homework in my own seted time (I like to do things rapidly and well done)and i can ,at the end and have succeded,be much more happier knowing that it all was done with no help, showing how capable i am.
The Disavantages:Some time it takes too long in some topics because i have too much doubts, but at least today the self taught student has the internet, which makes it much easier.I have to buy more books which may make it more difficult for it makes necessary more discipline to get all the information and have a good deal with them.And...
Advantages - no excessive work burdens.

Disadvantages - no focus;
- no planning;
- no one to talk to;-
- no one to test your knowledge, and to know what are your weaknesses and strengths

Hello there,

There are some students that prefer to travel alone to other country. It's good, because if you travel alone, you'll have to speak the native language, there's no choice. Perhaps, the disadvantage is that you'll need a long time to adapt your lifestyle in that new country and maybe you can get some homesick.

Best Regards!!

I think if someone studies alone, the study becomes more profitable.
Advantages: there aren't a lot of people asking questions that are unnecessary for you, there isn't conversation and teachers reprehending the whole class, you can study the way you best think you can learn, you don't need to wait for the others and you go further and faster in the subject.

Disadvantages: you don't have anyone to take your questions out, you can't ask for help in an exercise or something like this, if you don't understand something in your book you can ask for someone to explain better, if you're not disciplined and organized, you can distract a lot and do other things unless studying, like Tv, snack, Computer, games, and you can procrastinate a lot, you don't have a timetable, usually you don't know where to start, but all these things you can change with EnglishExperts, that helps a lot in a self-teaching.
I have always studied english alone, because been in a public school it's not the best way to really learn a language. The most teachers I had, were so outdated and had such a bad pronunciation that I coudn't let them discourage me. The best part in studying alone is to focus on the subjects that interests you and focus on the ways you know is more effective. For me it's the television, watching movies and series.
And the hardest part is sometimes you keep a doubt to yourself without a answer due to a lack of a person,a teacher to help you.
Advantages:
I don't need put aside any money for this,
I set my schedule,
Listening and vocabulary increase quickly.

Disadvantages:

Writing and Speaking need interaction with others students, but it's very difficult
I don't have a teacher for correct my mistakes

Actually I don't like studying in groups because when I do, it always end up in a useless conversation, the only way to avoid this problem when in group studies is studying with unknown people, but it, as everything in life, has its disadvantages.

Advantages: I can study when I want to, schedule the topics that I want to learn myself and I dont have to pay for ( just Internet connection ).

Disadvantages:
I dont have a teacher to correct my mistakes.
No classmattes to practice my knowledges earned at school.

Please, help me!
Advantages:
I can study whenever I want
I have the liberty to study whatever I want, according to my needs
I learn new ways/methods to learn the language
Learning English via the internet, I will find valuable resources
Full independence when you reach a certain level

[What was supposed to be] Disadvantages:
I miss having a good teacher around me to correct my mistakes
Well, this one above can be fixed if you have a native-speaker friend you can talk to, the first thing you can do is ask him/her to point out any mistakes he/she thinks ought to be corrected, so, if you have reached a certain level of English, maybe an English teacher might not be that necessary. Nevertheless, I must say that having a teacher around you is very important on your way to fluency, and not saying that because of me being an English teacher, haha.

Disadvantages:
You sometimes will get too lazy, and that will not so often happen in a classroom, even though if you are not in the mood, things will not work out on their own to you, just because you have support from a teacher.
I prefer to study alone because you can go at your own pace. One of the main reasons why people don't get fluent quickly is that they procrastinate... and if you're learning in a group setting, there are bound to be some procrastinators in the class that will hold everybody else back. In fact, I've never had a teacher for most of the languages I speak... studying alone is a strong preference of mine. ;)
Advantages:
It's very cheap.
I can study whatever I want.
I don't have any homework rsrs.

Disadvantages.
Is necessary be very careful and organized.
Is also necessary like the subject, I believe people who don't like math can't learn it by yourself, for example.
And is necessary make a plan, things that you will learn until certain day, a kind of deadline.
Advantage: You can Study whenever you want to.

Disadvantage: Nobody will correct you.

Disadvantage: In my case, i don´t pratice a lot pronuciation because there is no one to corrects you.
Depends on the kind of study you are following. If you are training conversation, two or more students is very important.
Hello!

I love to studying alone, that's how I learnt everything I know about english.
I believe that there is not such thing like a "natural self-taught". We all can be self-taught and the education we receive should just prepare us for that.

The advantages are many:
- you control your schedule
- you study whatever you feel is most important for you, without being restricted by rigid "planned books" made by someone else.
- you exercise your independence, your curiosity and your problem solving skills.

Of course, for me, studying alone doesn't mean to be closed in your room and apart from social contact. I think studying alone provides even more chances for us to seek for another "self-taught" learners willing to improve in whatever field you are interested.

The thing is that some people who say that "only can learn with a teacher telling me everything" put thenselves in such passive learning condition that makes learning tedious, harder and inefficient.

There are some disadvantages for the "lone learner" just in relation to a learner who, besides having a good teacher, is a self taught hinself. In other words, having a teacher is going to potentialize the results for the self taught. :)

I think this is it!
I can study whenever I want, if I feel like studying at 3 a.m. I can do it

I miss having a good teacher around to correct my mistakes.
Advantages:
-You don't need to spend money, it's totally free.

Disadvantages:
-You're not going to have anybody to help you when you have a doubt and nobody to correct your mistakes.

Advantages: I can choose what's better time to do my homeworks, read books and practice listening.
There are no limits of time, if I want to study 3 hours or 15 minutes, this is my choice...
Disadvantages: To learn alone you can´t loose the focus.
A teacher can solve your doubts and see your progress under a professional line of sight!
Advantages

I don´t need to pay for it!
I can study lestening music, use the computer or read a book.
I Can study 3 times a day and I won´t to stay tired. Because I cant stop any time.

Disadvantages:

I can´t know like this my English, because I´ll be alone.
I won´t get a certificate

certificate is more important because you can find a good job!

It´s my opinion

The only disadvantage of studying alone is that you can't really practice speaking skills.

There are thousands of advantages but I think the most important is that you don't need to waste your precious money.
I think studying English alone is a great advantage because it´s challenging. It will make you want to comunicate more, meet new people all the time to be able to practice. Of course, there´s nothing better then the internet to do this. The person that is really interested in learning English will do just fine by him self. The disvantages are, of course, not having a teacher to correct you, to guide you, and to give you lessons. I am trying here all by my self, I guess I am doing ok so far.
While studying alone, I used to struggle more; my performance was really good, but I often wished I had someone to guide me! Then, I started attending an English school. Though I've asked my teachers lots of questions, I relaxed: my performance has decreased, but thank God I did not stop learning!

Advantages:
I can study how I want, I can choose the material. There are many differents tools to study, for example on internet, CDs, movies, music etc.
Desavantages:
I don't have teacher to answer my questions and doubts. If you Study alone you must have discipline and focus, It is very difficult for all students.
I graduated from an English Course two years ago. While I was there, I used to think I would be fluent when I reached the highest level. Now, I know that it is nothing but a myth. I agree that having a teacher or other students to talk to is really important, even for basic students. However, neither a teacher nor classrooms are enough to lead someone into the fluency. I've realized that the most important thing someone should do to be fluent is the following: study correctly and constantly. It doesn't matter if it will be at an English Course or alone. Unfortunately, neither the course I attended nor others I have been in touch were appropriate to me. In my opinion, they waste a lot of time with not only old-fashioned but also ineffective methods. For this reason, I decided to study by myself and I'm doing well. Recently, I've learned a great technique from Frank Florida that really works for me. Now, I'm really happy and more confident that I can speak English anytime and anywhere.
I miss having a good teacher around to correct my mistakes.
I think that the advantages are the freedom of the rules of the school, this rules genereally delay our developement, because we don't can go beyond the program.
The disadvantages are for example, that this text must have erros, but I don't perceive, because everything I now, I learned alone.
This way, I have a good undertanding of movies and texts, but I have too very difficuty for to talk and to write.
OBS: I like that corrected me, so, feel free.

Bye
