Question: What are the main problems in the city you live in?

Answer:

- There's a slogan for my city: "Visit Santo André - and get a traffic fine". --> I've already gotten some;
- There is a river - Tamanduateí - that crosses the city. Ten minutes of rain is enough for it to burst its banks and block the whole city;
- It has one the highest car-robbery rates in Greater Sao Paulo, and for this reason the car insurance is a complete rip-off;
- Violence. I've been robbed three times. Last time police was fast enough to kill one of the f¨!$#@>)*!% guys

Even so, I do like to live there!

Now it's your turn!

Hi, Flavia

I live in Rio de Janeiro and I think the main problems are violence and precarious health system.
Maybe one day everything will be resolved.

The main problem in the city where I live is blight. Due to the economic crisis many stores have closed their doors. A developer wanted to take over the historic part of the city, tear down the historic buildings, and build a parking garage and shoping center. The residents fought the developers and won, but more and more businesses are closing, and unfortunately empty display windows or boarded up store fronts are tarnishing the historic center.

I also live in RJ, but there are much more problems to talk about like these:

-Big holes in the main avenues.
-Heavy traffic of cars and bus.
-Not good system of train.
-Bad public administration.
-Bad provide of education.

I really like to live here but these problems drives me crazy sometimes. Rio de Janeiro isn't good enough, maybe it was the wonderful city.

No reasonable safety for those who wish to take a stroll out at 3 a.m. with a million Reals in one's pockets here as my niece's Massachusettian husband realized after he landed here for the second time.

I've already fell victim to three different thieves on three different times. The first time a couple of young men carjacked me and my father up to two different ATM's for money. When they felt they had enough money from us they dropped us off at some point of South BR 101 on the outskirst of Jaboatão dos Guararapes-PE.

Then, years later, these two kids leveled some bottle glass shards at the underside of my chin while my car idled in a traffic jam and demanded my wristwatch. I handed it over to them.

The third time some thieves set up a kind of checkpoint on a narrow back road. I had to stop as they stuck up the car next in front of mine. Then one of the thieves "casually" walked up to me and demanded, "Me dá o celular!" I handed it over to him. Curiously enough, there on the next corner stood stationed a police patrol car, its overhead lights blinking lazily. They apparently couldn't or didn't see a thing nor realized that a robbery was in progress beyond the corner! Still a bit traumatized, I drove right past them but stopped under a by-pass to report the robbery to yet another stationed police patrol car.

Eu: "Boa tarde".
Policial: "Boa tarde."
Eu: "Tão assaltando logo ali na esquina... Me levaram o celular..."
Policial: "O senhor deve se dirigir à delegacia mais próxima e prestar queixa..."
Eu: "Obrigado..." :-(

As Flavia requested, here goes the English version of the exchange the one of the thieves, the cops and I had:

First exchange. A thief says:
"Me dá o celular!" (Hand me the cell phone!)

Second exchange. The cops and I say:

Me: "Good afternoon".
Police officer: "Good afternoon."
Me: "They're stealing cell phones right around the corner... they took my cell phone..."
Police officer: "Sir, you must drive to the next preccint and report the robbery there..."
Me: "Thank you (officer)..." :-(

Hello

I live in a small town in North Parana. And it's main problem are a lot of holes in the streets, and dirty.
Well, I live in SP and, indeed the main problem is traffic, but I've gotten around it commuting by motorbyke.
I live em Jundiaí (SP) and I guess the main problems are transit, public transportation and public health system.
But, i love live here.
;)
Boa Tarde,

I am an American and live in Pensacola, Florida with my wife Cristina who is a native of Jundiai, SP. I am 66 years old, like to ride my Harley Davidson, take photographs, and visit Brasil. I must apologize as I can only speak a little Portuguese can read less and write even less than I can read.

The most serious problem in Pensacola is that the state, county, and city governments do not know how to manage money, and have spent or committed to spend more than they have. As a result the politicans now want to inrease taxes so they can continue to spend money in a wasteful manner.

The second most serious problem is the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the oil is due to hit our beaches late today or tomorrow, and will devestate the local economy when the fish and birds are killed and our sugar white sand beaches become an oily mess. Many people have lost their jobs already, because of the tourists are not coming due to the threat of the oil. The economic loss will be very high as about 50% of the local economy is based on tourism and fishing both sport and commercial.

The third most serious problem in Pensacola is the rising crime rate especially in the less affluent parts of the city, but this is a common problem world wide.

The last problem in my opinion is that from the time I leave my house it takes me at least 19 hours to fly to Sao Paulo, so I can not visit Brasil as often as I would like. However we are planning to go Sao Paulo, Jundiai, Paraty, and Fox do Iguacu in January and February 2011.

If any one would like to communicate with me by e-mail you can send messages to w.slayman@hotmail.com .

Hi Bill,

Welcome to EE forum.

Thank you very much for your contribution. It is very important for us, Brazilian students of English, to read about the reality of other parts of the world. And fell free to answer all the questions of this section - Portuguese is forbidden here! Your participation in other sections of the forum will be welcome, as well.

I hope this be a good source of learning and information exchange for you and also for your wife.

I live in Porto Velho-RO and the city has a lot of problems, for example:
- most of people don't have a sewer system, so all the dejects goes to "only gods knows where" (anywhere but the proper place).
-It's a very violent city, you don't feel safe anywhere.
-It's an ugly city(at least I think), we don't have a big tourist point etc...
-Our politicians do nothing to improve the city (I know, most of Brazil suffer the same problem).

Despite of all the problems above I love my city, and I hope to see it getting better and better.
Wow, Fox do Iguaçu really sounds more interesting, like a hollywoodian dangerous place. :o
Just kidding, Bill!

Well, I live in João Pessoa, Paraíba. The most east point of the America. (Please, correct this sentence for me)
Despite it's very beautiful, it's actually a small town, with not many leisure points to go. Of course, for a tourist, it's a beautiful place to come visit. But for a native, we only have about three leisure choices for the weekend.
And, to be honest, the world that I want to be can't be found here.

See you, guys!
Israel,

My typographical error, Fox do Iguacu should have been Foz do Iguacu.

Please consider the following:

I live in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba. It is the eastern most point in the America's, and a very beautiful small town without many recreational facilites for young people. Tourists find Joso Pessoa a beautiful and relaxing place to visit. However, with the limited recreational facilities my hometown has little to offer me at this time.
I live in Belo Horizonte, and I think the main problems here are the transportation, esp. train and buses, the streets are very bumpy, and although it was the Garden City, it's not anymore, so I think it must have more nature and squares! The education I think it's very good, it has the best placings in Brazil, but the public education is awful! Oh, I can't forget of the hospital, principally the public hospitals, it's horrible, you have to be waiting a long, a long time sitting and then you comfort is terrible, the doctors aren't good and.... I don't know, but BH has to get better anytime!
In my city the mean problem is the violence. Very people think that here in the Rio de Janeiro is a great place to live, i agree a little. The noise of "bailes funk" is a big problem, afterward there is the trafic drugs in the "favelas" (slums). The must streets are sprayed, here in the Brasil there isn't a control of cleaning of the streets. Very people live in the streets and they usually don't looking for a job or don't have opportunities.

Without doubts, the main problems are security, infrastructure and poverty.

The first item, I can tell that here we don't have places where it's possible to live without that pressure of making everything fastly in order to reduce exposition, for instance, when opening the gate I do it quickly to assure not only my security but to keep my home and family safed.

The second item, there's no doubt this is a real problem in almost every spot, as I'm not a rich person, far from that, I live where the ground isn't so good, there's no great hospitals and entertainment options, however, I cannot deny, there're some positive aspects, like good drugstores, supermarkets and thinks like that. Infrastructure is a though nationalwide issue.

The third one, poverty, oh my goodness, it'll be a problem forever, I don't see good improvements in a near future, however, as everything is possible, perhaps that item will become less markable.

By the way, my city is Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, a countryside of São Paulo, near Campinas. To be honest, despite evertything I told, I do like this place because it's where I grew up and where I go home when I want to see my parents.
I live in Brasília and the main problem here is: there isn't parking lots! It's too hard to find a place to left our cars. There is any parking lot building in the city. That's the main problem in Brasília, in my opinion. It's full of cars but with no place to left them.
I born and live in rio , but violence and rio de Janeiro are synonymous actually .. ahahah its not a joke , only the truth..

I live in a small town, so we don't have so many problems here, but if I have to point out one I will say that gossip is the main problem lol... You know, little cities has lots of it.

But there is one specific problem that bothers me a lot: the slow connection to the internet that the city offers, I think that this is the saddest thing in here, at least to me.
I'm just looking for a place to rent in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and so far it seems like there are no problems here at all! Haha... I'm sure I'll find out about some downsides of this place at some point, but so far it's awesome. The weather is great year-round, food and rent are much cheaper than in Brazil or Europe, my internet connection is fast and reliable, people are friendly and crime is virtually nonexistent!

I live in Vila Velha and the main problems are corruption, violence and drugs but really the main problem is the political.
Wel,l where I live you will find many corrupt politicians, They don't care about the population, and for this reason, there is no hope for the people of my little city, they don't get a job, cause there are no factories, no corporations.
The only hope for my people, is to leave the city and go to the south part of my country, where they can find jobs, get money to buy their things, their foods, their clothing and to have a more comfortable life.

I live in Sao PauloI and the main problems are violence and heavy traffic of cars .
Hi ! :D I'm Victor, 23 and I live in Sao Paulo but is totally near of Sao Caetano and Santo Andre too.

I guess that the most problem of all Brazil first be the politicians.. All the problems only will start to change when come to up solve all problems..

But this is gonna take a long time for over...
I guess that Brazil has all full power for be a greater country... but .. not yet..
After the problem with politicians begin to improve then will be time to live here without think that we don't have a righteous public service.

One option for us in this moment is.. Get out of here.. and go to live in other country that has a better life quality.

So, I don't know, maybe I'm a kind of person that I can't stand more this injustice.

but it's my oppinion :)

Tks ;)

there will be time to think about actually living here.

In my city there are so many trash, and now the people put them in front of the prefecture! Everybody is angry with the administration because the last warrant have done many things against us, mainly misuse of funds and it makes the city a copy of the noon, full of holes!
At moment, I live in Salvador. I don't like to live here, because people is too impolite. This the first problem and the others is violence, full bus all the time, loud music on the street in any street! If you look for a good job, you can't find, because don't have one.

Live in Salvador, is too difficult! I'd like move for Rio de Janeiro. There, have train, subway and bus! The people is polite and have too many jobs for me.

Hug´s for you!
I live in rio de janeiro and here have many problems like health and precarious public transport, education and horrible lack of public safety.
Well, I lived all my life in Rio. As any big city here always had some problems with violence, poor hospitals and schools, etc. But in the last years the traffic is impossible. All city is literally stopped! It is normal do you waste about one hour to travel ten kilometers.
