Question: What has been your greatest discovery online?

Examples of answers:
  • English Experts, needless to say.
  • You definitely wouldn't like to know what I discovered online.
  • I discovered that the Internet can bring you closer to people who are far away from you and drive you away from people who are close to you.
  • I discovered it is possible to study, keep contact with people who I haven’t had the opportunity to see since a long time, make some money, have some fun, etc etc etc.

This is an easy question for me to answer!!

In September of 2001 I was surfing the web and came upon a site called "Matchmakers.com". As a joke I said what the heck, and registered and they selected a lady at random, little did I realize that in two short months that lady, Cristina Panizza, and myself would be married. So I think it is safe to say that my greatest discovery online was my bride.

By the way this is a true story, without any artistic license used.

DHST,

A minor suggestion if you do not mind; since you have two discoveries you need a plural pronoun or noun, which leads me to suggest one of the following.

Acceptable - "They were English Experts and TeclaSap, both are very good!"

I would prefer - "My greatest online discoveries were English Experts and TeclaSap, both are very good!"

I hope this helps you in your English Studies, please let me know what you think.

kk, thank you very much for correcting!
I didn't even realize I should've used "they were" or something like that, since it wasn't only one discovery, but two!
Feel free to correct me anytime...
I think I kind of wrote it as I would write in Portuguese...

First of all internet gave me my husband, we met each other in "almagemeas.com", an old site just like "Matchmakers.com". Then, I discovered a new world where almost all things that I can imagine are possible!
Obviously, free por- I mean..... Torrent websites! My HD wouldn't be half as full if it wasn't for them!

Patricia,

Congradulations on your internet assisted marriage. I would like to suggest one very minor improvement to your post which would be to add "the" after "all", so that the first sentence would read "First of all the internet gave ...", otherwise very nicely done.
Hi,

The greatest discovery onlines was EE which help me improve my English!

Hugs,

Eduardo,

I would like to suggest two very minor improvements in your post.

The first is "onlines" should be singular ie. "online" .
The second is "help" should be "helps" .

Otherwise very nicely done.

Hi everyone!

Well, my better discovery was English Experts because I don't get remaining no reading it everyday! I love searching here expressions and reading answers that help me a lot.

Thank you EE! :D

But during last year I have been others descoveries like Twitter, LiveMocha and some friends who I couldn't know yet.

Other discovery was knowing that I can learn English and any idiom that I want through internet. The internet is the biggest discovery of the humankind.

I'm sorry if I was any mistake here, ok!?
If anyone correct my answer, I'll be very happy!
Thank you again!

Bye
Hello,

Without doubt, English Experts is one of my greatest discoveries online, because here I find plenty of interesting people who want to learn not only English, but make new friends too. Since I created an account on EE forum, my English has become better, thanks to EE blog and helps from forum's friends.

Another great discovery were online games, who times ago I was crazy for, but because I am with a lot of tasks there is no time for play them. :?

Hugs!

Rafael,

Your first paragraph is very good with only one minor suggestion ... "and help from my friends on the forums."

I would like to make several changes in the second paragraph; "Other great discoveries were online games that in the past I was addicted to, but recently I have too many tasks to complete each day, and I no longer have time to play them."

Please compare my suggestions and let me know if you understand them or if you have any questions.

By the way, I have noticed a marked improvement in your writing recently, keep up the good work.
Bill,

I appreciate your words about my writting, it gives more confidence to keep up the good work!

Let me understand the reasons of your suggestions. You suggested the change: "... and help from my friends on the forums". I am able to see you are correct and I want to see why my version is awkward. I wrote: "... and helps from forum's friends". In my version, does the forum have friends? Because if it does, my version is outright wrong. Well, you understood what I tried to write despite my confused phrase. ;)

In the second paragraph, if I want to use the term "another"? In this case, must I write "Another were online games..."?

Thank you so much!!

Rafael,

As you wrote,
"... helps from forum's friends..." does not make since as an inanimate object can not have friends, and your sentence states the "forum's friends" .

"Another" is singular, and "games" are plural as is "other", therefore you may use; "another discovery is a game", or "other discoveries are games".

I hope this explains your questions, thank you for asking.

Bill,

Now I understand my mistake about the first question. From this time, I will pay attention to this rule.

I did not write correctly the second question. What was supposed to be proposed is the sentence: "another was online games". In this case, is there any misunderstood? Since I think another is referring to discovery (in singular) and has its meaning. To be honest, I am not sure if it makes sense, but in Portuguese it makes sense!

Again, thanks for your reply and sorry about the wrong asking!
Rafael,

In order to prevent confusion I would like the word discovery injected if that is what you are referring to, such as: "Another discovery was online games ... ".

I know English can be confusing, I have been studying and learning it for some 66 years and I still make mistakes and get confused sometimes, and Portuguese is almost impossible for me. If you do not mind, will you carefully read your last post and see if you can rewrite it to improve the syntax and tense, after which I will "take a shot at it" if necessary.

Idiom:
Take a shot at it. See: http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/take+a+shot+at
Bill,

I guess understood last post (as you wrote) as first post ...

Here is my rewrite:

"Without doubt, English Experts has been on of my greatest discoveries online, since there I have found plenty of interesting people who want to make new friends as much as learn English. Afterwards my account on EE forum was created, I have improved my English skills, and it has been possible due to helps from friends on the forum.

Another discovery was online games, which I had been addicted to, but recently I have so many tasks to do all day long, therefore I have no longer time to play them."

This is my best for now!

Hello!

One of my greatest discoveries was Youtube! Be the Roberto Marinho of yourself! hahahahah
I'm always watching something on Youtube and the other one was ExpatShield -thanks for someone
here in the forum who has passed the information along about how to watch bbc outside of the UK.
Gabi,

How about, instead of saying ... "thanks for someone" ... say ... "thanks to someone" ... . I feel that this is sightly better. Unless you are thankful for the information on how to watch BBC, in which case ... thanks for the information... would be correct.

Just a very minor suggestion. :D

I found out that Internet can be a very good teacher. Everything I want to learn is there, I just need to look for it.
