Question: What was your most frightening experience?

Examples of answers:

- My dad and I got robbed some months ago and although there was a gun pointing at my face, I was much more frightened about my dad who was very nervous helping the other (stupid) guy to drive the car out of the garage.
- I got very moved about the thirty three miners who were trapped for more than two months in a mine in Chile. I guess the first seventeen days that they did not have any contact with the outside world must have been quite frightening.
- I fortunately can’t remark any frightening experience, and I hope my life continue calm like this.

Now it’s your turn!

One night, I was watching "Linha Direta", it was showing Spirits appearing to people and scaring people, some stories about fire on buildings and the dead ones was coming back in Spirits!
Later I went to bed, I was very scared, I covered my whole body in my blanket and I started to sweat. Finally I slept, but then, I dreamed I was lying on the sofa with my eyes closed, I was listening someone telling a story, but when I opened my eyes, there was no one there! But I still listened to the voice, in front of me! I got pale! I woke up and I was very sweaty! I took my pillow, opened my door and run immediately towards my dad's bedroom and slept there!

One sadder: my mom was at the hospital, I hadn't seen her a long time, I was with my sister and my aunt and grandma sitting on my grandma's bed, everyone was in silence. Then, my dad got in the room, with the eyes red, and went directly to my aunt, he said something to her and my aunt went tell it to my sister, she started crying and I knew somehow what was going on and I started crying too, so my dad got closer to me and started telling that some people have to leave and that's normal, we both were crying, and finally she told that my mom died. I couldn't understand, I didn't know what was gonna happen after that, I couldn't get that I wouldn't see my mom anymore!
Since I am sixty six years old and have spent most of my life in the Army I have had many frightening experiences, most of them envolving life or death, however the most frightening experience of my life was when I was twenty two years old and looking back at it is was actually very comical, expecially since I had already served two years in Viet Nam.

I had asked Jackie, the girl of my dreams to marry me, and her reply was that I had to ask her father for permission to ask her! Her father, Joe, had a reputation for being a extremely mean old man, who was overly protective of his only daughter, since she was the youngest of four children and fifteen years younger than the third (youngest) boy.

I "himed and hawed around" for a week or so, and finally worked up the nerve to ask him, and being relatively intelligent I thought I would have a better chance if I asked in a public place. I made reservations at a very nice resturant for Joe, his wife, Rose, Jackie and myself, then told Jackie about my plans. She said it was a good idea, but when I asked Joe and Rose to dinner, he said why don't we have Jackie's brothers and their wives come also, so I reluctantly changed the reservations from a party of four to a party of ten!

When the big night arrived I was so nervous, I could hardly think, much less talk, and while everyone else was having a good time laughing and carrying on I was ready to die, and hardly ate anything. After the meal was finished I told Joe that I had a very important question to ask him, and he gave me a mean look and said "go ahead and spit it out we don't have all night", I looked at him and his sons, who were all giving me mean looks and blurted out, "I want your permission to marry Jackie". He smiled and said it's about time you asked me, I've been waiting for almost a month and if she is agreeable then we have all agred that it is fine with all of us. I immediately showed her an engagement ring that I had purchased a month before, and she said "YES" before I asked her to marry me!

The marriage lasted thirty four years, seven months, and sixteen days, until the Lord called her to him.

For the courious three idioms to look up:
Him and Haw
Spit it out
Blurted out

Oh, Bill... things are SO DIFFERENT nowadays!!!

him and haw = I found "hem and haw" = To be hesitant and indecisive
spit it out = desembucha
to blurt sth out = to say sth impulsively, without thinking

work up the nerve to do sth = to get/take courage to do sth
Flavia,

My spelling error. It is hem and haw not him and haw. :o  :(

My most frightening experience: I nearly drowned in the sea back in the 60s. I swallowed a lot of water. A kind soul, a guy who noticed my hapless flailing about, retrieved me from the seashore.

There was only once in my life I got so frightened and scaried that I couldn't move a finger, totally frozen and blurred vision.
I also lost the track of time, and my legs couldn't stop shaking.
It was a cold day, but so nervous like I was, I could see little smokes coming out of my skin.

Well, there was during a exam, that could define my life for years (a schoolarship in overseas).
So nervous that I remember trying to write the answers but my fingers just didn't obey me.
Do I have to tell you the results?
Lucky myself I could pass in the following year. ^-^V

Adriano,

I would like to suggest some changes in your post, in my usual form of a rewrite please compare both and let me know if you need any explanations of why I made the changes.

There was one time that I got so frightened and scared that I couldn't move a finger, they were totally frozen, I also had blurred vision, lost track of time, and my legs were shaking uncontrollably. It was a cold day and I was so nervous that I was sweating with steam coming from my skin like small plumes of smoke.

This all happened while I was taking an examination for an overseas scholarship which could define my life for years. I was trying to write the answers which I knew but my fingers would not obey my brain, and I am sure that you can determine the results of the exam without me providing additional details.

Fortunately I passed the same test the next year.

I hope this helps your studies of english, please let me know it it was helpful.

I liked it!
wow!
Do all the Army, Special Forces and Majors are extremelly polite like you, Bill?
Thank you!
My weak point in all the languages I've been learning is the polite way to say things.
You feel so confident talking with your friends, your neighbour, a shop clerk, etc.. but when you get invited to gather with people like high rank politicians, a rector or a president of a company, you feel like all your skills have gone to who knows where!
I remembered another "frightening" experiences, it happened all the time with me in Japan.
"And this is Mr. Almighty-san."
Just after get introduced to someone (like the Governor of the Province), I always got scared to say a word, because I don't know if what will come from my mouth will be a proper word to deal with him.
Adriano,

Atataki o kotoba o itadaki, arigatogozaimasu. Or in English "thank you for your kind words".

I learned a long time ago that "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar". Also all US Army Special Forces Soldiers are trained to not be "Ugly Americans" and to respect other peoples, so I am not anything extraordinary.

Your problem with talking to those who have achieved a higher station than yourself in not uncommon, a case on point is: As a young sergeant I was ordered to brief a three star General on a project my unit was working on. When I started the briefing I got so nervous that I could not speak, even though I had rehearsed the presentation many times. The General said, "Calm down son, and remember that I put my pants on the same way as you do, one leg at a time. Take a deep breath and you will be fine." I restarted my presentation and completed it without any errors.

Another trick you can use in this type of situtation is to imagine that the person who is intimidating you is standing there without any clothes. It is impossible to be intimidated by any thing you are laughing at even if the laugh is just mentally. ;)

Jedson,

If you do not mind I would like to offer some suggestions in the form of a rewrite. Compare both and if you have any questions please let me know, and I will try to explain and answer your questions.

"I was in a headon collision which occurred on June 3, 2009 in Beberibe, which is located in the state of Cleara, Brazil.

Two friends and myself were coming back to (or from) Natal when a driver in a Vectra, going in the opposite direction, crossed over into our lane causing the headon collision which unfortunately claimed the life of my friend, who was driving our car."

I hope this helps your study of English.

Thank you. Certainly helped me a lot.
Maybe there was others experiences, but now I can only remember one nightmare I had when I was a child: my sister and my brother were kidnapped and trapped in a plastic so them couldn't breath, so I didn't have much time to save both and had to choose which one to save. Thank God I woke up before anything worse happened but I got so frightened that until now I remember this horrible dream...
