Writing challenge - Rewrite a sentence!

Marcio_Farias 1 24 214
Rewrite/recast sentence #1 without using any of its auxiliary verbs. Tap into your creativity and see how wonderfully it works for you!

For example:

"Joe is going home to repair the faulty plumbing pipes" may well become "Joe goes home to repair..." or "Joe walks home to..."

  1. The phone company is not certain when the new directories will be ready.
Now post your rewritten/recast sentence for everyone else to see and then write an intirely different sentence with auxiliaries and ask us to rewrite/recast it minus the auxiliaries. Do it now!

Marcio, here your sentence: "The phone company is not certain when the new directories will be ready."

Here is mine: "The phone company doesn't have certain when the new directories can be ready."

Now another sentence to everyone rewrite:

He hadn't had gone home although he have been getting sick

See you.

danilorpo, nice try.

In my non-metaphysical opinion, I thought these two variants might do the trick, yet I may have come a long way.

"The phone company does not know when it will have the new directories ready."
"The phone company does not know when it will prepare the new directories." (a shorter version).

On your "He hadn't had gone home although he have been getting sick."

"He didn't go home, although he started feeling sick (by now)."

New writing challenge.

"She hasn't done her homework."

Okay. Let's call it a word game.

Next:

"The phone company does not know when it will have the new directories available."

"He hadn't had gone home although he have been getting sick."

"He didn't go home, although he started feeling sick." (best version)
He didn't go home although he had been getting sick. (correcting the verb tenses)

Mary Ziller, thank you for pointing out our mistakes.

Next challenge. Originally the writing challenge or word game precluded the use of auxiliary verbs, meaning you should rewrite it without "musts," "coulds," "shoulds," "cans," mights," "haves + verb," "is's + verb," "oughts," or any other extant auxiliary. But I dropped it altogether; on a more lax approach, you can use any of these to conveniently or better rewrite a sentence.

"The game must go on."
