At the table x On the table: Qual a diferença

Em português, eu entendo que há essa expressão: "Eles estão na mesa" que dependendo do contexto pode significar que eles estão em cima da mesa ou também pode significar que eles estão ao redor da mesa sentados em cadeiras, por exemplo.

On The table= quando a pessoa está sentada EM CIMA da mesa> ''They were on the table, these boys are brats!''

At the table= À mesa .

''They were at the table to have dinner'' = Eles estavam sentados à mesa para jantar''
