Diferença entre "well-known" e "known"

Hello dear friends,
Is there anyone who can explain the difference between the adjectives "Well-known" and "known". I've looked them up on the dictionary and they both have the same meaning. According to my dictionary, they mean "conhecido". Do you guys have the same opinion?
I thought "well known" meant "bem conhecido" whereas "known" meant "conhecido".
I would appreciate your comments.

I noticed that you made no distinction between "well-known" and "well known" which can be (generally are) a bit different from one another.
Well known - usually, "bem conhecido" (but not in the sense of - conhecido por algo/ter reputação de/notoriamente conhecido...)
Well-known - famoso(a), reconhecido(a) [entre seus pares ou entre o público em geral por algum feito.]
And...conhecido(a) ["muito conhecido/bem conhecido", if you wish.]
As in "In a small village in the interior, a well-known sinner was barred from entering the church." (Na pequena cidade do interior, um conhecido pecador foi impedido de entrar na igreja.)
