Fontes de frases "seguras" para aprender inglês

Swarmfire 2 19
Estou montando cards e preciso de fonte de frases "seguras" para não acabar aprendendo gramática com linguagem coloquial - Assim espero... Me surgiu a dúvida depois de ver outras frases com o mesmo verbo, se tal uso estaria correto.
His eloquence did not avail against the facts

Avail - to produce or result in as a benefit or advantage : GAIN

Indeed "not avail against" (and things related to "avail") doesn´t ring colloquial to me. "His eloquence did not avail against the facts." isn´t grammatically wrong, one just doesn´t use it on everyday basis, but you can wedge this one in some more formal writing.

Take my writing for example, by being so "grammarly correct" guy on a Message Board and using a certain limited vocabulary (just a few "gonnas/haftas/wannas, phrasal, etc) I was called a "bookish" guy. ;-)
I am not saying one should throw their cards with certain words, not at atl (I myself didn´t quit my bookish ways, just soften it from time to time and depending on the audience).
Some months afterwards I was on another MB from the UK and wrote something like "Hi guys" or something like that. The women got offended and let me know that they wouldn´t feel at easy being called "guys", ha ha ha! It´s a big world, eh? (oops! Wrong place, some would say "eh?" is a Canadian exclamation.)

It wasn´t about Apps, I was not an ANKI guy (or other App, for that matter) but I was a message board guy, kind of. I got scolded, kind of, for my American English and bad manners (language-wise) at the Mustardland (I miss it much - because I picked up some British English there).
But I was always given the benefit of doubt, and they let me explain myself, with the Americans I had my share of good will people, but a lot more of sarcastic answers tantamount to "putdowns" to the ones that aren´t used to.
One time I asked "what´s up?" and somebody answered "the stars, the sky, the clouds"... Ha ha ha, somebody else always rescues you, if you ask, if you keep on the track.
But, sometimes initially you may feel as silly as a little kid.
My problem was, I had always met people in the flesh and in need of some information back here in the country. So, they would use more formal language. Now you would plunge into a way informal/colloquial message board and burn your fingers somehow. If you can´t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, right? But I didn´t throw the baby with the bathwater and learned a lot by staying in the kitchen. ;-)

I live in Rio, it´s on my profile a city with a fair share of beaches, thankfully. And I don´t live far from them.
But to be honest, I live in Brazil, that´s why I know something about Recife, Joao Pessoa, Natal, Fortaleza... Then I have been in places like Floripa, Santos, Paranagua, and even Acau just across Carne de Vaca- PE.
And I have friends and acquaintances from pretty much every state, even Rondonia! LOL. Indeed the world is shrinking, sort of; so we met people from Brazil and from abroad at around the corner. When and where you expect least expect it!
On the English side, tourists flock to the seaside cities where I have overheard some conversations in English and French (mostly) but you can see a multitude of languages in Rio and Sao Paulo state, for a change.
Perhaps that´s why I took such interest for languages! In time, I didn´t give up Portuguese, sometimes I let pass some things not to sound a nitpicking guy, a grammar hound. It happens more often than not, we learn English or other language and end up treating ours as if it was a second language! ;-)
Anyway the focus is some experience with language (usually English) not me. But, at the end of the year we make some exception to the rules, though.
