Another way to put it is "non-oficial biography" (meaning non-authorized/unnauthorized biography).
Those biographies will be submitted to scrutiny and might find the law in their way, so sometimes "unnautorized" would mean that the author thinks some parts of the book, and some versions, were 'challenged'.
If the "non-authorized" sense is not a piece of marketing, libels, publicity rights, breach of confidence, could be reasons to sue the author and take a fair share of the profits, sometimes even rendering the work unfeasible. Anyway the author might weight the cost vs profit.
