While the rule isn't strictly applied, I believe "a good number" is preferred for countable nouns and "a good part" for uncountable nouns.
So you'd have "a good number of students" and "a good part of the student population". Though "people" and "population" seem to be in between and accept both "a good number" and "a good part".
