Here in Goiás this verb(cotar) is used by business people refering to something like an auction,this verb also refers to going to a lot of places in order to find out the lowest prices.Survey is a general way of expressing both situations,Tim´s suggestions seem more specific to me.

Thanks for the tip.
I am learning quite a bit of Portuguese (and quite a bit of English too ) from my visits to the Forum.
My expressions are certainly not appropriate to an auction situation.

Maybe we should start a new topic about auctions. It could generate some interesting vocabulary.

Actually,I thought of suggesting "quote" and "estimate" but it seemed a bit too distant from "cotação".Anyway,now I know it makes sense.

a public meeting where land, buildings, paintings etc are sold to the person who offers the most money for them at auction
The house was sold at auction.
put something up for auction (=try to sell something at an auction)
This week 14 of his paintings were put up for auction.
auction house (=a company that arranges auctions)

[countable] a written statement of exactly how much money something will cost [↪ estimate]
quotation for
Ask the builder to give you a written quotation for the job.
a quotation for car insurance
Get a couple of quotations from different companies before you decide which one to use.

asking price [usually singular]
the price that someone wants to sell something for [↪ selling price]

It does make sense if you consider the standard definition of "cotar".
